Hogan Sampling, Lower Red Lion, St Albans, Hertfordshire

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 18 Apr 2026. Eighth and final stop on this St Albans’ visit: Busy for our early evening arrival but one free table to be seized in the main bar area of this ancient two-roomed pub but afforded exterior seating as well in a rear yard and covered area housing its pop-up festival bar. Prompt, friendly service at both bars.

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 18 Apr 2026. Seventh stop on this St Albans’ visit: Busy footfall for our early evening arrival and having met up with a fellow real ale enthusiast from SE London at the Alban Arena and then our walk here along the busy Hatfield Road. Friendly prompt service with a selection of six cask ales available on the inside.

Jack William, Bird in Hand, North Curry, Somerset

Visited by Jack William on the 22 Apr 2026. A fleeting visit early evening. I was a bit put off by newness of the decor and the vast array of shiny, chromed plastic fonts adorning the bar. I eventually found two hand pumps lurking in the middle of the middle of the bling. Pub was pleasantly busy with a good locals feel to it.

Visited by Jack William on the 22 Apr 2026. Lunchtime visit after visiting nearby Montescute House. This pub is no longer a brewpub and has been taken over by Hall & Woodhouse. A bit of a bland corporate feel to it although the food was good and substantial.

Hogan Sampling, CAMRA 2026 AGM at Alban Arena, St Albans, Hertfordshire

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 18 Apr 2026. Sixth stop on this St Albans’ visit: Quiet on my arrival a little after 4.15pm as the CAMRA AGM held at The Alban Arena, St Albans’ largest theatre and entertainment venue, was not due to finish until about 4.30pm and so I timed it just right for picking up a selection of regional CAMRA branch magazines and being the first to the festival bar. Some 34 real ales on and with many from Hertfordshire breweries and a handful from Cambridgeshire and Buckinghamshire. Assembled members did not pour out of the main conference area until about 5.15pm and so I was afforded a good 45 minutes of peace and quiet to sample three thirds without the inevitable queuing that would have become necessary once members emerged.

Jack William, Carew Arms, Crowcombe, Somerset

Visited by Jack William on the 21 Apr 2026. Afternoon visit to this Grade II listed pub that is also listed by CAMRA as a heritage interior. Sprawling place with a stable block to one side converted as a dining area; a snug; a traditional bar with inglenook fireplace (and fire) and further large function room including an indoor bowling alley. I liked it. 4.5% Golden Original from another small, local brewer Wiveliscombe Heritage also on.

Hogan Sampling, Hare & Hounds, St Albans, Hertfordshire

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 18 Apr 2026. Fifth stop on this St Albans’ visit: I had visited before and so recall there was a Welsh landlord. Indeed, on this visit there was Cardiff’s Brains Brewery’s tap takeover with four of their real ales on and more to sample from Brains’ own pop-up bar inside the pub down one end of it, including Brains’ Dark which I had a sample of, and where bottles of Brains' selected ales were for sale. A good few in this ancient and picturesque backstreet pub for our mid-afternoon visit but prompt friendly service from the main bar. Still with the contingent from the Enfield & Barnet CAMRA branch who had not failed to disappoint on this trail so far from The Beehive. After this visit it was time for me to leave them going forth and so as to wend my way to visit the St Albans Museum and Gallery for the specially convened Inns & Alehouses Exhibition put on as part of the St Albans’ City of Ale festival and where I would get to pull for the first time ever three original handpumps and no doubt salvaged from some poor pub no more or no longer serving real ale.

Hogan Sampling, White Hart Tap, St Albans, Hertfordshire

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 18 Apr 2026. Fourth stop on this St Albans’ visit: The perfect lunchtime pub as I also visited in November 2025, and so I knew what to expect: a not too dear choice of pub-food and fast turnaround for what was chosen. Prompt, friendly service early afternoon at the bar for some grub and a selection of six real ales on and five from Tring Brewery. I followed members of the Enfield & Barnet CAMRA branch to this one from The Beehive and through some of At Albans’ historic and quiet backstreets.

Hogan Sampling, The Beehive, St Albans, Hertfordshire

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 18 Apr 2026. Third stop on this St Albans’ visit: Not overly busy and pretty much ahead in the beer trail from The Great Northern. Prompt friendly service for my early afternoon arrival. I met up with a contingent from north London, namely the Enfield & Barnet CAMRA branch, and who I first came across in The Little Green Dragon micropub on their patch. Ticking over but seating for all of us!

Hogan Sampling, Great Northern, St Albans, Hertfordshire

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 18 Apr 2026. First stop on this St Albans’ visit: Second one in on its opening at 12 noon and just minutes from St Albans City, the town centre’s second railway station. This pub was reached by going past St Albans' old preserved signal-box, now a museum, and along some quiet backstreets. A warm friendly welcome and prompt service for their freshly-on range of six beers on the inside and six in the rear garden in a wooden shed called the Dog House. Quite a few real ale enthusiasts got in shortly after me, including some from the GLC (Greater London Council) Real Ale Society. All of The Great Northern's beers had been drunk dry the day before by all accounts and thanks to extra footfall created by the CAMRA Members' Weekend and AGM at St Albans’ Arena from Friday 17th April to Sunday 19th April 2026. On top of this, St Albans was hosting the City of Ale festival, featuring several beer trails and pub-based events such as mini-beer festivals.

Hogan Sampling, The Oxted Inn, Oxted, Surrey

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 11 Apr 2026. 8th stop of the outing to Oxted and its environs: Busy on arrival early evening as indeed all Spoons are. My last visit to a Spoons was at Maidenhead three weeks ago. One vacant table to be found and unless hovering to seize another. Strange that this Wetherspoon pub and the Oxted Royal British Legion Club are the only real ale establishments in the whole of Oxted itself and not including Old Oxted with just two pubs there offering a single choice of real ale in each. Strange indeed and given the local brews earlier in the day supped in all of the pubs in the more rural locations around Oxted. They were much enjoyed and recognised for being local and by sheer contrast, a restaurant/pub a stroll away from Old Oxted was offering an unrivalled six real ales. Met with prompt, friendly service as is customary in a Spoons and told the curry would only be some 10 minutes away which it was which certainly did not disappoint. 8 real ales on was impressive for an otherwise apathetic real ale town.

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 11 Apr 2026. 7th stop of the outing to Oxted and its environs: Ticking over with a good few in for our early evening visit and willingly signed in as visitors. Often CAMRA membership aids entry as it does to most CIU clubs in my experience. Two real ales on, London Pride, renamed on the pump clip as Gordon Pride and in memorial to a local member of the Club, and local Dorking Brewery’s best bitter, DB One. Friendly service and good banter with one of the regulars of the club.

Hogan Sampling, The Wheatsheaf, Old Oxted, Surrey

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 11 Apr 2026. 6th stop of the outing to Oxted and its environs: Such a shame no real ale on since the start of 2026 by all accounts. Looks so appealing from the outside in historic Old Oxted. Long before the railway arrived in 1884 and birthed "New Oxted," the heart of the community beat along a steep cutting of the A25 and known even then as Old Oxted. Its story begins in 862 AD as Acustyde, or the "Place of the Oaks." By the time the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086, it was already an established settlement of 250 people, supported by two mills and a local church. The High Street took its familiar shape during the 13th and 14th centuries, evolving into a vital waypoint for weary travellers trekking between London and the South Coast. Today, walking the street feels like moving through a living museum; it is lined with 15th and 16th-century half-timbered houses, including Old Oxted's historic pub, The Crown Inn, just visited on our 5th stop. As the centuries progressed, the architecture shifted. The 18th century brought The George Inn, constructed with striking purple bricks, while the early 19th century saw the addition of Shorters Row, a narrow passage of modest workers' cottages. For generations, this stretch served as the main A25 thoroughfare, a bustling hub where locals frequented the village butcher, dairy and wheelwright. It was not until the modern bypass was constructed in the late 1960s that the High Street finally traded its role as a major artery for the quiet, historic charm it retains today.

Hogan Sampling, The Crown Inn, Old Oxted, Surrey

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 11 Apr 2026. 5th stop of the outing to Oxted and its environs: Not overly busy for my late afternoon arrival and to meet up with a fellow real ale enthusiast from south-east London but for one large group who rose up from their seats to the bar to replenish their glasses as I arrived. Rather than wait at the bar, I took this opportunity to have a good look around this upstairs pub full of interesting old framed photographs whilst they were all served. Thankfully the pub has escaped a modern interior makeover which lends it an extra olde-worlde charm. The upstairs low ceilinged bar area consists of original dark wood beams befitting a Tudor-era coaching inn and is complemented by a large traditional fireplace. The inn was originally a staging post for coaches travelling between London and the South Coast. A welcome taster confirmed the one and only beer was in good nick.

Hogan Sampling, The Old Bell, Old Oxted, Surrey

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 11 Apr 2026. 4th stop of the outing to Oxted and its environs: Strolling from The Haycutter at Broadham Green to Old Oxted stood out as the most relaxing walk of the day wending my way along footpaths across fields and through bluebell-covered woods to Old Oxted with not another soul in sight, making for a perfect spring walk in the Surrey Hills and following a classic stretch of the Tandridge border path. It led me past Oxted Mill and near the River Eden, where the terrain starts to undulate as you approach the village of Old Oxted, and then turning left into Springfield and then right into Beadles Lane and walking up to the High Street where you come out facing The Old Bell pub. Four handpumps cheerfully greeted me but on closer examination one was labelled as coming soon as in the Greene King Grand Reserve, and another two as currently conditioning as in Morland’s Old Session Hen brewed by Greene King, and Greene King’s Abbot, leaving the George & The Flagon Golden Ale also by Greene King as actually on. As I got here a large party arrived and so just opted for a look around this truly historic place rather than waiting for a half of the golden ale and as the other two pubs to visit were just feet away in Old Oxted.

Hogan Sampling, The Haycutter, Broadham Green, Surrey

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 11 Apr 2026. 3rd stop of the outing to Oxted and its environs: Bustling late afternoon on arrival from the walk from The Diamond*. It all looked so picturesque from the tiny old fashioned cottage frontage. Around its side a huge carpark and barn-like edifices came into view. A long bar meant there were multiple places to stand at to be served but I naturally gravitated towards the 6 handpumps all on. Prompt, friendly service in likely to be my first ever venture into a Brunning & Price. On our visit there appeared to be only one available table in the bar area for drinking at of possibly five. By luck fellow drinkers waved to indicate the table next to them was free. Brunning & Price state that they see the bar area as the "heart of the pub" and designed for casual drinkers and if a table is free in the bar area, you are welcome to sit there for drinks only. If all tables are taken, the first group to add their name to the waiting list would typically be offered the next available suitable table and if only drinking, then not a table in the dining areas. Getting out after a swift half did not come quick enough due to the general noise level although no thumping music to add to the cacophony of voices. The next leg of the journey was blissful as a public footpath outside The Haycutter wended its way across fields and bluebell-covered woods to Old Oxted with not another soul on it. *Getting to The Haycutter was achieved by retracing my steps from The Diamond Inn along Holland Road as far as Holland Junior School and turning left into Warren Lane opposite the school, and then turning right into Mill Lane, and then on reaching Hurst Green Road, turning left for a stretch along and then turning left again into Tanhouse Road and where The Haycutter is about two thirds of the way along on the left-hand side. The whole journey between the two is about 1.4 miles on very flat, quiet roads with pavements.

Hogan Sampling, The Diamond Inn, Holland, Surrey

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 11 Apr 2026. 2nd stop of the outing to Oxted and its environs: To get to this second independently-run freehouse of the day’s visits, I simply retraced my steps back to Oxted Station to take the first available service to Hurst Green at 14:32, and all of 2 minutes between stops. There is also the later 14:47 and 15:02. From Hurst Green Station, you can cross the footbridge over the platforms or go over the road bridge and turning right on exiting the station into Greenhurst Lane and then into Hurst Green Road, which then becomes Holland Road. You pass of note Windmill Manor Care Home and Holland Junior School, both on your left, before reaching The Diamond Inn, also on your left. A warm welcome was also offered here and prompt, friendly service followed. Its old-fashioned bar with pillars and etched glazing lent an extra olde-worlde charm. It was ticking over with locals seated at the bar and nearby tables but a “pew” to be had among them and all their jovial banter. It is open all day thankfully on a Saturday as demonstrated on this visit.

Hogan Sampling, The Bull Inn, Limpsfield, Surrey

Visited by Hogan Sampling on the 11 Apr 2026. 1st stop of the outing to Oxted and its environs: My first ever visit to Oxted and no real ale pubs in Oxted itself apart from Wetherspoon’s The Oxted Inn by Oxted Station at 1-4 Hoskins Walk, Station Road West. A fast train even on a Saturday from London Bridge, just stopping at East Croydon, got me to Oxted in just 31 minutes. Getting out on the right side is the trick in opting for Station Road East. On this afternoon outing, a hearty breakfast in a local café beckoned first before the walk to the first drinking stop, The Bull Inn, High Street, Limpsfield. You cannot help but be struck by Oxted’s distinctive "mock Tudor" town centre, largely built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries following the arrival of the railway in 1884. Locally, the town has been nicknamed "Oxted Mock Tudor" given its style of architecture. You can follow quite a scenic cross-country route beyond the Skyline Café in Station Road East by turning left into Gresham Road and taking the first right turning just after Oxted Library into Granville Road and then the first footpath on the right between houses, found just after the 12th or so house along, following the footpath crossing the River Eden and then taking the footpath wending its way in the same direction staying on Granville Road would take you. Then through Glebe Meadow veering to its far-left corner, through a small carpark, and then turning right onto High Street, Limpsfield, and walking past St Peter’s Church. The Bull Inn is just a little further down on the left-hand side. After a dry but windy walk, a warm welcome and prompt service from the friendly barmaid. The locals on stools around the bar lent this restored establishment a proper pub-feel and charm despite its somewhat spartan and spruced-up interior but still retaining its open fireplaces including a log burning stove in the main bar area. Two cask ales on, including one from the local Westerham Brewery.

Jack William, The Royston, Broadstairs, Kent

Visited by Jack William on the 10 Apr 2026. First and last visit on a tour of Broadstairs with my daughter. Superb micro and thanks for the recommendation Dosser. We arrived just after noon but already a few other in. Very well kept beers and the best pub toilet art I’ve seen in a long while. Andy very informative and still working hard when we returned around 4:30 by which time the pub was bussing. Excellent.
