Afternoon visit. I ordered a mild before I noticed that all bitters were on offer on Wednesday afternoons, and would have been cheaper than my mild.

I knew they'd have a mild on here and indeed they did. It was busy. We sat and watched "Har" play "Bre" on Sky and tried to guess who "Har" and "Bre" were. We got "Har" right!

I had a bit of time to kill while waiting for a mate to get to Whitstable, so I grabbed a paper and came here. This is a great pub, with a fantastic atmosphere. I am always left thinking how much better it would be with a more interesting beer lineup. Oh well...
BeerABVScoreNotes
Elgood's - Black Dog Mild3.60GoodYup, really good as usual. Black with roasted malt and chocolate. Good beer.

Really busy when we got here at about half seven, managed to grab a seat towards the back though. Came here before heading to see a band at the old neptune hoping for a good pint to start the evening. It was not to be unfortunately.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Smiles - Old Tosser4.30PoorThis is not a good beer. Sweet with a slight toffee flavour, but that was it. I think dishwater would be a fair dexription of this beer.

Had a wander around Whitstable for no real reason. It would have been rude not to stop in for a pint. Really busy for around 4 on a saturday. Great, lively atmosphere.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Elgood's - Black Dog Mild3.60ExcellentRich, chocolatey with a fair amount of roasted malt. How do they get so much flavour into a 3.6?

I took Cam and Libby to Whitstable for the morning to enjoy the terrible weather. After a rapid walk around town and along the sea front we came here for a beer. The welcome was very friendly (we were offered free welks and prawns etc. and shown where we could hang our coats up to dry). It's interesting to have been at the 2009 Kent CAMRA pub of the year yesterday (The Butcher's Arms in Herne) and in 2008's winner today.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Elgood's - Black Dog Mild3.60AcceptableThis is why I came really. It was fine but a little one dimensional (just strongly burnt malt).

After a series of rubbish bus journeys I eventually arrived at Whitstable and met Ian here. The staff and locals were friendly and the beer excellent.

Lovely looking pub, then once inside the staff were all very friendly as were the locals. This pub single handedly restored my faith in whitstable.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Pitch Black4.30GoodIt’s dark brown in colour with an aroma of roasted malt. The flavour is also mostly roast with some smokiness and bitterness on the finish. Not bad at all.
Highgate - Irish Whiskey Ale4.60GoodThe aroma is sweet with notes of fruit, hops, and malt. The flavor is sweet fruity combined with light notes of whiskey and smoke. Pretty good beer.

Here with Jane for the CAMRA Kent Pub of the Year Award ceremony. It was busy with both locals and CAMRA members and after the speeches the price of beer was knocked down to £1.60 a pint!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Arundel - Castle3.80ExcellentI wasn't sure about this for the first few sips but as I got into it the leafy hop flavours really appealed to me. Plenty of that standard Arundel core taste. An excellent beer
Elgood's - Black Dog Mild3.60GoodMilky cold coffee. Very smooth.
