Primarily a storm-avoidance stop, but I stayed a little bit longer than was strictly necessary to dodge a soaking. Choice of live sports on TV – golf from Liverpool in front bar (a couple of people watching) or Test Match cricket from Lords in the back bar (the crowd-puller).
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - London Fields Pale Ale4.00GoodVery pale gold and hazy. Citrusy, but lacks some of its usual body.
Hopcraft (experimental side of Pixie Spring) - So Much To Answer For3.80AcceptableThis turns out to be a light mild. A baffling beer type to me; it just seems like an excuse to put nothing very much in the brew kettle.
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Bethnal Green Bitter4.00Not Tried

Early to mid-evening. Lots of familiar faces and good banter in here. Current prices for the real ales are £2:50 a pint for Brodie’s beers, £2:60 for guests.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopcraft (experimental side of Pixie Spring) - Citraic5.20ExcellentGolden, strong, lemony.

Staying until late with a group of friends.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Wimbledon3.80ExcellentGreenish-yellow in colour. A Pale Ale ‘dry-hopped’ with various fruit zests. Fresh, oily, citrus tastes.
Hopcraft (experimental side of Pixie Spring) - Bikini Atoll4.50ExcellentA very heavily hopped, golden beer.

Lunchtime into early afternoon, between running a few errands before going on holiday. Pub very quiet at this time.

Late Sunday afternoon visit, and a pretty laid-back atmosphere in here. Shame to ignore the Brodies brews, but there were some interesting guests to try.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Pixie Spring - Golden Pixie4.00ExcellentA very good example of a dry, hop-led golden ale.
Clouded Minds - Luppol Ale Light2.70ExcellentNice to find a cask beer here from this elusive London brewer. Low strength, high hop rate and enough body to pull it off.
Hopcraft (experimental side of Pixie Spring) - Monkey Business5.60AcceptableA version of this beer that has been aged in wooden whisky barrels. The barrel-aging has left an intense woody/whisky-ness that for me is too dominant – I could not really taste the beer itself.

Despite low-key advertising, it is very busy here for a Mikkeller tap takeover – all part of the growing GBBF Fringe I think. I list all the cask beers that were on, plus those of the 11 available Mikkeller keg beers I drank.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mikkeller - It's Alive Mango (BA Chardonnay)8.00ExceptionalFabulous, amber beer with subtle mango, lots of spritzy carbonation and a winey woodiness from barrel-aging.
Mikkeller - Spontan Rosehip7.70ExceptionalA cloudy, orange coloured, lambic style beer, flavoured with rosehips. Has a mouth-puckering, dry sourness.
Mikkeller - Schwarzbier5.50ExcellentAuthentic-tasting, easy-drinking, East German style, black lager.
Mikkeller - Single Hop Series: Sorachi Ace6.80ExcellentDeep amber coloured. Thick, strong and a bit sticky.
Mikkeller - Black15.00ExcellentActually at 18% - beyond the scale available on this website. Outrageous imperial stout.
Milestone - Raspberry Wheat Beer5.60GoodAn almost clear, amber colour. Strong. Definately got raspberries in it. A bit of cereal too.
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - American Wheat4.80GoodOrangy-brown in colour and very murky. Sour. Some hop character.
Mikkeller - Jackie Brown6.00GoodA brown ale.
Mikkeller - Monk's Elixir10.00GoodA very strong beer in the Belgian quadruple style. Belgian yeast tastes.

Just a brief visit on the way home. Much talk of Leyton Orient’s prospects at Shrewsbury tomorrow. I saw the list for the forthcoming Easter beer festival – it looks brilliant and almost made me want to change my Easter plans so as to be able to attend.

I managed to catch the last ten minutes of the Real Madrid vs Man Utd game in here. Both bars rammed full of viewers, although all the chat at the bar was about Orient’s prospects at Southend next Wednesday in the “jellied eel derby”, rather than the game at hand. And they seem to have drunk nearly all the beer, with a relatively limited choice available on handpump.

I’m sometimes obliged to make a bus connection right outside – an obvious excuse to pop in for a quick one.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - London Pale Ale - Citra5.00ExceptionalPerfect, pale hoppy beer. Like a full-on, stronger version of the regular ‘Citra’, balanced by a good malt body. Lovely.

Although I’ve lived in London for just over thirty years, I think this is only the third, or possibly fourth time I’ve spent Christmas here. Luckily I’ve a decent pub within walking distance for that important pre-lunch pint. It’s busy, and not just because the fist pint is on Guv’nor Geoff.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - London Pale Ale - Galaxy5.00ExcellentPale and hoppy and luscious.
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - Kiwi3.80GoodPale and a bit cloudy. Very grapefruity – almost extreme in its fruitiness.

The pub is found in Leyton, Greater London, E10 6AE.

Community local in the Bakers Arms area of Leyton, in High Road Leyton, with a large comfortable dark wooden interior. The pub was present here by 1855 and was acquired by Charrington’s Brewery from Truman’s in 1870 – in later years it passed to Ind Coope. It was rebuilt as we know it today in 1897, on a slightly smaller site than its predecessor. Used to be famous for a good selection of Brodie's beer which were brewed in the former stable block to the rear. Sold on and the brewery has been relocated outside London. Refurbished and reopened under new ownership in late-May 2018. Reported late 2022 no long selling real ale. 2023 reported back selling real ale.

We have visited this pub 54 times, seen 131 different beers and tried 82 of them.
