My first time here, but I had heard good things about it, especially during their festivals, that I had to come. Gorgeous sunshine, so even with the trains being out, I cycled to and from here from Canterbury. I sat and drank beer in the garden and chatted about beer. Perfect really.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Goacher's - Best Dark Ale (aka Original)4.10ExceptionalIs it me or is this lighter in colour than normal? Whatever, it's superb. Great and interessting malts ranging in texture and flavour. Simply one of the best beers in Kent.
Westerham - Little Scotney Green Hop Ale4.30ExcellentClear dark amber colour, thin beige head. Wow the hop on this is stunning. Sherberty green. A real explosion of flavour on a bitter. Really impressed with the flavoursome hops. Not bitter or overly citrusy, but really sherberty and fresh. Love the hops, but really not bitter. Wonderful
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Oatmeal Stout4.60ExcellentThey had this down as Oat Mill Stout, but pretty sure it was the Oatmeal. Black, dark brown edges, lasting dark beige head. Some liquorice, but another example that Eddie makes exceptional dark beers. Good bitterness on the finish. Lovely choc and proper thick malt. Some date fruit in there. Really good and the only beer I had twice.
Daleside - Autumn Leaves3.40ExcellentBeautiful chestnut brown colour with lasting beige head. Dry malt aroma. It's pretty good. Lovely dry, fruity bitter with some pepper hop on finish. Excellent in fact. A bit like an ESB but only at 3.4%. Really good tasty light ABV bitter.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 73.80GoodMy idea of a session beer. Good biscuit
Dark Star - Hophead (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)3.80GoodYes hoppy, but a styranghe bit of mint in the mouth, but then good lasting hoppy finish.
Old Mill - Fall Over4.50GoodPale chestnut lasting beige head. Yeasty aroma. Malty besst bitter and "Just Like Heaven," by The Cure came on the stereo and I couldn't have been happier. Very good traditional best bitter, maybe a touch more hop needed on the finish for my palate.
Oakleaf (now see Fallen Acorn entries) - Hole Hearted4.70AcceptableStill just not as hoppy as I remembered it say 3 years ago when the Cascade hops jumped out of the glass at you.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Rye Pale Ale4.00AcceptableBeen looking for this for ages. Clean gold, lasting bubbly white head. I thought perhaps some diacetyl on the aroma. Interesting rye cereal flavour in the mouth. Really quite hoppy on finish. Cracking condition makes up for a lot. Some lemon and lime citrus on finish. Yes, some biscuit/digestive biscuit flavour on finish. Some diacetyl butter. Odd, but interesting and definitely worth trying.

They were having a beer festival here as well as at Wickhambreux so decided to pop along and check it out as well. A fair selection of ale but unortunately it was very quiet and lacking in atmosphere. We decided to head back to the Rose after a couple.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA4.50ExcellentIn great nick. Really malty bitter.
Westerham - Finchcocks Original3.50GoodLight biscuity bitter. Not bad at all.
Acorn - Darkness4.20GoodNice mild. Fruity with lots of rosted malt.

Saturday afternoon session. There were a good few people in, although many were sitting outside in the sun as it was warmer than in the marquee. You can tell that a lot of effort goes into this event, the beers were in great condition (the landlord warned us off the Innkeepers as he said it wasn't right), the open stage was a good idea (the bar girl's rendition of Blue Moon being the highlight)and the overall atmosphere was really pleasant.
BeerABVScoreNotes
St Austell - Tribute4.20ExcellentThis was the best beer for me. Clear amber colour, bubbly white head, lots of soft fruit in the taste and a bitter finish. Lovely.
Orkney (Sinclair) - Dark Island4.60ExcellentSmoky aroma, sour fruit dominates. Excellent.
Robinsons - Unicorn4.20GoodI had this in Cumbria where it was served with a sparkler, the result was a creamy, soapy brew. Here is was on gravity and it was like a different beer entirely. This was fruity with a sherbert sweetness, marmalade finish. Excellent condition.
Oakleaf (now see Fallen Acorn entries) - Heart of Oak4.50GoodMid brown beer with white bubbly disappearing head. This was a pretty standard ale but again in excellent condition.
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Mad Bob4.40GoodA bit of sweaty hop aroma. Mid brown colour, quite sweet but fresh.
Hidden - Potential4.20GoodLight brown, some hop and spice, really quite good.

Jane, Isabel and I arrived mid afternoon and immediately bumped into Brian and Pete so we sat and chatted to them. The beer festival was being held in a large marquee in the garden that housed the beer, a small stage and plenty of seating. An eclectic mix of singers and musicians played during out stay with one chap’s rendition of Strawberry Fields being particularly good I thought. The condition of the beer was really good and the staff were very friendly.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 73.80Good"The beer wot I saved". Good condition. Rich and syrupy with sharpish hop finish
Woodforde's - Wherry3.80GoodAs the man serving pointed out before he would serve me, it was a bit cloudy but he said it tasted fine. It was, and it did. It had a hint of lemon to it that made it interesting.
Hidden - Potential4.20GoodIn good condition. Reddish in colour with raspberry flavours and a hint of vanilla. The finish was sharpish.

Pretty busy on a Sunday lunchtime. Good, friendly atmosphere and the landlord informed me of their forthcoming beer fest, which will be in it's 3rd year I think.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Marston's - Burton Bitter3.80AcceptableQuite nice if standard brown, reddish beer. A little sulphour, a bit of malt, but a little thin in the mouth. OK.

Bramling beer festival, held in marquee in the gardens of the pub. Good selection of ales, live music on a stage made out of hay bales, plenty of seating and a friendly crowd of people on Saturday afternoon. The staff were very friendly and informative - an excellent afternoon session.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Whitstable - East India Pale Ale (or EIPA)4.10ExceptionalFirst ale that hit me as I was looking at the beer list. Started off with this (it's becoming a bit of a habit). Slightly sweaty hop aroma and with a surprisingly creamy head. Fresh prickly feel in the mouth with the usual excellent citrus twang.
Dark Star - Hophead (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)3.80ExceptionalStunning. Fresh and clear. Pale golden straw colour, with hay in the aroma. Citrus and mangoes and bananas in the mouth. Clean finish. Could have drunk it all day.
Dark Star - Golden Gate4.50ExcellentPale golden colour, thin bubbly disappearing head. Orange citrus aroma, with bitter marmalade feel. Excellent.
Potbelly - Pigs Do Fly!4.40ExcellentGolden ale with intense citrus aroma. Excellent bitter-sweet balance.
Shepherd Neame - Late Red4.50GoodDark fruit aroma. Mid brown, no head. Good bitterness and balance. A bit yeasty but easy drinking.
Burton Bridge - Staffordshire Knot Brown Ale4.80GoodA slight sulphorous aroma. Mid brown clolour with no head. Sour cherries and new carpets in the mouth, followed by bitterness with a hint of caramel. Flinty and slightly sour finish.
Westerham - Little Scotney Green Hop Ale4.30GoodLight brown with a thin white head. Slightly spicy aroma with citrus finish.
Elgood's - Cambridge Bitter3.80AcceptableLast one of the day. It was mid brown with no head. Spice and fruit aroma, but with a thin finish. Not bad, but unremarkable.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - East Kent Pale Ale4.10AcceptablePale golden with thin bubbly head. A bit thin in the mouth, but with good bitter bite. Not particularly memorable.

Noticed a few pump clips behind the bar which were: Pedigree, John Smiths and Courage Best. He had London Pride on but most people were drinking Guiness. Friendly enough pub with a locals feel
