Relatively quiet in here, to the extent that I was able to get a seat inside.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - Rye5.50GoodBrown in colour. Smooth and strong. Rye flavours subdued at start, but developed over the course of the pint.
Vocation - Chop & Change Topaz4.50GoodA golden beer that took a long time to clear. Bitter and fruity hop tastes.
Oakham - Citra4.20Not Tried

Crowded and loud in the mid-evening, but the DJ’s music choice was more to my liking that at Howling Hops next door.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - Night Jar9.20ExcellentOn keg dispense. In the style of a Belgian Triple and very good. Expensive, but in a good cause; part of the proceeds helping to provide shelter for the unfortunate migrants/refugees in Calais.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Late Star5.00AcceptableA rather ordinary, golden-brown Bitter. may not have been at its best here.

All too brief a time standing out by the canal before setting off as a group to watch football at Brisbane Road. Less busy here than I’m used to. Three Moor beers were also available but I forget which ones.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - Pale Ale4.50GoodI enjoyed this fresh-tasting Pale Ale.

As ever, it is packed out here tonight.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Hippocrates' Purge4.50ExcellentI drank a rather mediocre honey beer the other day – this is the opposite end of the scale. Nice, subtle honey flavours, enhanced by orange blossom and elderflower.

Six deep at the bar here in the mid-evening, but efficient staff are dealing quickly with the masses. Unusually, there is only one cask beer available tonight.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - Sour5.30AcceptableOn keg dispense. Sour it certainly is, but I was disappointed by Crate’s first entry into the popular sour category. The beer is a little unsophisticated. It tastes like a base beer ready to be blended, or aged, or to have fruit, spices or hops added (maybe all of that is going to happen). A pint was almost too much – in fact it was for Robert and some of his was used to top up the canal.

Early evening. A chill wind is blowing along the canal, so the tables at the front are shunned and instead everybody is out the back in the yard. Disappointingly I have missed the new Citra Pale Ale, which has run out.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - Pale Ale4.50GoodA hazy golden colour, fruity and a bit yeasty.

Pub at its best – a warm Sunday evening with crowds of people sat outside, a variety of ramshackle craft moving on the canal to watch, and plenty of staff to keep the beer queue moving.

Relatively quiet at around 1pm and I managed to find somewhere inside to sit. Rain seemed to be putting off some of the passing trade here.

At 2pm we are ahead of many here, although it is becoming noticeably busier throughout our time at the bar.

Early evening visit in warm sunshine. Crowded. It looks like the aftermath of a beards and tattoos convention, but this is just everyday life in Hackney Wick.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Summer Wine (SWB) - Cherokee Golden Ale4.20ExcellentHand-written pumpclip says ‘Pale’ rather than ‘Golden’ Ale – not sure if this is a different beer? Tasty, golden, US-style Pale Ale.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E9 5EN.

Hackney Wick has seen a transformation from grim area of industrial units to thriving ‘creative’ quarter. Only problem is, all the traditional pubs had closed down. The Crate Brewery was established in July 2012 in a former industrial premises and is a combination of brewpub and pizza restaurant, although with a predominately ‘pub’ feel. There is a large, high-ceilinged room and outside seating (some in boats) beside the canal. Initially the five-barrel brewery kit was visible in a room alongside, but in July 2013 the brewery moved to larger premises nearby. Inside, the furniture is made of recycled packing cases and pallets. It stands literally at the gate of the Olympic Park.

We have visited this pub 58 times, seen 103 different beers and tried 61 of them.
