Late afternoon on Boxing Day, a good friendly atmosphere, we had a couple in here before catching a bus back to Stratford for a train home.

Early evening, the delightful smell of brewing was very noticeable as soon as we approached the door to enter. We ordered our beers and were immediately invited to have a look at the brewery as they were brewing at the moment. This offer was duly accepted. A thoroughly enjoyable visit.

This pub has now reopened after refurbishment. Anyone who remembers its old days as a dodgy, all-night boozer with lovely etched glass partitions and London’s worst gent’s toilets needs to re-visit and reassess. The home brew is now labelled as being from ‘WH Brew Pub’.

One Mile End Brew Co. (formerly Mulligans at the White Hart and then WH Brew Pub) - IPA (previously 5.1%)5.00ExcellentNow labelled as 5.0%. A really good IPA, the flavours enhanced tonight by excellent condition.
One Mile End Brew Co. (formerly Mulligans at the White Hart and then WH Brew Pub) - Pumpkin Ale4.00GoodI do like a seasonal Pumpkin Ale. This one is golden and satisfyingly spicy.
One Mile End Brew Co. (formerly Mulligans at the White Hart and then WH Brew Pub) - Irish Red Ale4.30AcceptableNot my favourite beer style, but we decided to be completist and I had a half. Sweetish and red.

Evening visit and I found the pub closed, there was a chalked sign on the front door inviting people to use the side door, but everything was locked up. This pub is undergoing a major refurbishment so I expect it to re-open soon.

A very rapid pint on passing in the early evening. Not satisfactory – hopefully these are just teething problems for the new brewery here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
One Mile End Brew Co. (formerly Mulligans at the White Hart and then WH Brew Pub) - East End Brown Ale4.00PoorNot very nice. The further I went down the pint, the more obvious that this beer had an infection of some sort. I am sure the taste was not that which the brewer had intended.

This used to be a regular haunt of mine in the late 1980s and early 1990s when I worked in the area and the pub was run by the Murphy family. It has changed a lot since then and is currently undergoing a complete transformation with business continuing as usual. I had a good chat with the bar staff and was invited to see the brewery, I was particularly pleased to see supplies of malt some of the very best maltsters including Weyermann of Bamberg. My thanks to Stephen Harris of this site for alerting me to the fact that this pub now brews.

Evening. As I got there the quiz answers were being given - they took nearly an hour to give out and winners found. Great to see a face behind the bar from previous drinking exploits down Mount Pleasant way. Pub undergoing quite a facelift. The home brewed beers were pumpclipped as White Hart tonight and there were 2 that were on both handpump and keg.

Early evening visit for a quick couple of halves with Robert – on what is destined to be a long evening of breweries. At this moment, there seems to be some confusion over exactly what is the name of the in-house brewery here.

The pub is found in Whitechapel, Greater London, E1 4TP.

This pub was present at the London end of Mile End Road as early as 1750. It was rebuilt in its present form in around 1900 and is a striking building with a cupola high above the corner door. In the 1970s and 1980s it was the principle pub of the small Murphy’s chain of East End pubs, owned by a family of that name. This pub in particular became known simply as ‘Murphy’s’, and the White Hart name was forgotten for a while. It was notorious for its late night lock-ins, and a tap on the side door in the early hours was usually rewarded by the chance of a sly late one. At this time the pub retained superb etched-glass partitions and mirrors. All that was swept away some time in the late-1990s in a controversial refurbishment that left the pub with a large, open-plan, wooden-floored main bar and a function room upstairs. Further refurbishment came in 2013, and this saw the introduction of an open view kitchen and a micro-brewery in the cellar. Brewing was initially in-house, with beers sold variously as Mulligans at the White Hart or as WH Brew Pub. This brewing venture met with mixed success and in August 2014 the new One Mile End Brewery took over the kit and was immediately successful with its full-flavoured brews. The brewery quickly outgrew the premises and, in the summer of 2016, relocated to Tottenham. 6 handpumps on the bar counter. In September 2022 the pub passed to McMullen.

We have visited this pub 53 times, seen 117 different beers and tried 73 of them.
