I arrived full of expectation for the grand opening of the Goose Island Brewery place a few doors away only to discover that some last moment hitch had put the opening back a day. I came here instead. Inevitably it was packed at 6pm with nowhere to sit. At least, unlike in Wittenden’s recent experience, they were prepared to take payment in hard cash.

Late afternoon on a warm Saturday:packed and noisy.I was surprised to be made to pay by debit card-I prefer to pay cash for my beer. Not all beers available listed. We were by far the oldest there.

Looks to me like it has recently been re-opened and re-furbished as a shabby chic centre. Incredibly busy, and not a place to sit at 7pm on the evening I was there. The large beer courtyard/garden was packed, as was the bar area. I quite liked the decor, stripped wood and bare brick worked very well.

It is a shame that this pub is so very expensive, because it is a likeable place and I would like to visit more often.

Saturday lunchtime visit and the pub is fairly quiet, with pretty much everybody out in the back yard. Shame about the high prices (£4:20 for this pint) as this is a very pleasant pub.

This pub re-opened at 6pm after 12 years of dereliction, and by half past it was packed out. Given its location right on the boundary between City Boy and Hipster territories it is bound to be popular. But at £4:20 and upwards a pint for the real ales, I’m not sure how frequent a visitor I shall be.
BeerABVScoreNotes

The pub is found in Shoreditch, Central London, E1 6PJ.

Long established pub on Shoreditch High Street which has been rebuilt at least twice. Once followed a disastrous fire in 1794; then it was again rebuilt, in the form we see today, in around 1900. A Truman’s house since at least 1870, the pub declined in the 1990s, acquiring a rather unsavoury reputation, and closed in 2001. It lay shuttered and semi-derelict until re-opening on 5 April 2013. The street frontage has been beautifully restored, whilst the two room interior is a stripped back area of bare bricks and wobbly floorboards, with tenth-hand furniture. There is a large backyard.

We have visited this pub 9 times, seen 34 different beers and tried 10 of them.
