Late afternoon in one way, round the island bar and out the other. Nothing to attract or spend money on here in what used to be a really superb basic market pub.

Gulp, £5:10 a pint; even in the old Public Bar. Despite this outrageous pricing, this seems currently, and certainly tonight, to be Borough Market’s busiest pub.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Sambrook's - A.P.A.4.50GoodA golden beer, tasty without being special. Despite its beer style, this is still dominated by malt rather than hop flavours.

Evening. My first and only visit to see what it is like. All I'll say is bring back Sid and Courage Imperial Russian Stouts.

This pub has completed the transformation from Borough Market’s scruffiest to possibly now its smartest public house. The floorspace has actually increased, pushing back into the former toilets and backyard area, there is some rather pricey food available, and a new, spacious outside drinking area to the side. Good to see that Young’s have just about retained the two sides to the bar, although there is no longer a separation into ‘posh’ and ‘plebs’ as in the old days.

Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood3.70GoodPersonally, I think Young’s beers improved when brewing was shifted to Bedford, and this was a tasty pint of ‘Ordinary’.

Just read that this pub is to re-open before Christmas 2012. Of course it has been closed for several years whilst its top storey was decapitated for the new railway viaduct which runs immediately above it. Will be interesting to see what internal changes are made, if any, on the ground floor. Looks like Young's are taking back control from Red Car too.

I've walked past this pub dozens of times and never been in due to the attaction of the Market Porter, Brew Wharf and the Rake. Sunday evening, trains delayed, Rake and Barrow & Banker closed, so this was a perfect excuse. Narrow pub with lively public bar and separate saloon bar entrance. Both bars flank a central split bar. Youngs and Wells beers on even though this is a Red Car pub.

Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's Winter Warmer5.00AcceptableFruity and malty. Some raspberry, but that might be a perfume from one of the women sat close to me. It's an alright ESB, I've had better pints of this beer.

The pub is found in Southwark, Central London, SE1 9AA.

Located in Stoney Street in the very heart of Borough Market. Used to be a basic market pub with island bar opposite the market which used to be a Courage pub which in later years had a couple of good guest beers on. Used to be known as L42 Club (Signal above Pub). Upper floors were removed to accommodate the new railway viaduct which runs immediately overhead. Re-opened December 2012 after several years of closure for the railway works above. Transformed into a more upmarket venue in line with the gentrification of Borough Market clientele. Has a semi-outdoor "garden" area next door using what had been a derelict building for many years - partly open to the elements and has wall heaters for cold weather. Central island bar with 7 handpumps in banks of 3, 2 and 2.

We have visited this pub 10 times, seen 12 different beers and tried 5 of them.
