| Hogan Sampling | ![]() | 08 May 2026 | 4th beer of the festival visit: Presented with a lasting frothy head and lacing sticking all the way on this amber-hued bitter from Darwin Brewery, a craft microbrewery currently based in North Shields, Tyne & Wear, having originally been set up in 1994 in Sunderland as a small 18-gallon brewing-school system operating out of Brewlab* which is the UK’s leading provider of independent brewing training, laboratory analysis, and yeast services, and at that time based at the University of Sunderland. A dry fruited bitter first hit from this traditional English session bitter. A hoppy bitterness rising from its use of primarily North American Willamette hops lending some floral blackcurrant flavours. A gentle maltiness joining in, including its Amber and Crystal malts alongside a blend of standard pale malts lending for me toasted caramel and nutty malt flavours alongside a hint of sweet, baked-biscuit malt. Served in top nick with a superb mouthfeel. |
