| Hogan Sampling | ![]() | 22 Aug 2026 | 2nd beer of this visit: Exhibiting very good head and lasting lacing on this chestnut-brown porter from the standalone commercial brewery set up in 2015 in the village of Snainton, near Scarborough in North Yorkshire, but originally dating back to 2011 when the founder first began brewing in the cellar of the North Riding Brew Pub. A sweet nutty first hit from its pistachio flavouring infused post-fermentation. A very fragrant aroma hitting me of pistachio ice cream accompanied by cooking chocolate. An almost minty chocolatey-infused fruity bitterness rising aided by its English Bramling hops. A malty sweetness climbing up from its roasted malt alongside four other malts in on the mix. Its speciality malts are roasted at higher temperatures to create the caramelisation and charring which give beers like the North Riding Pistachio Porter their dark brown colour, heavy body and roasted chocolate and/or coffee flavours. The barley lends the sugars needed for fermentation. In its malting process the barley grains are soaked in water to trigger germination, enabling the grain to activate the necessary enzymes that act like tiny scissors to chop starches and proteins into simpler, usable pieces, and before germination is then stopped by drying the grain in a kiln. A hoppy bitterness prevailing. A sweet chocolate-infused wave on its sailing out. Served in top nick with great mouthfeel! |
