Courtyard Tap, Sudbury, Suffolk

WhoScoreWhenNotes
Hogan SamplingExcellent12 Sep 2026 Served with a very good head and lacing lasting superbly on this English Session Golden Ale brewed by The Courtyard Brewery, a microbrewery located in Gosfield, Halstead*, Essex, and which operates out of a historic mid-19th-century coach-house. A fruited first bite. A sweetened hoppiness rising from the locally sourced Essex-based hops. For this American-style golden ale, they are likely to be UK Cascade lending a punchy grapefruit and citrus note or two, First Gold behind its strong citrus, orange peel and marmalade flavours, and UK Chinook aiding a resinous, grapefruit rind bitterness present in the finish, alongside UK Harlequin or Jester, which are newer, celebrated British hop varieties bred to replicate American and New Zealand tropical hops. They are likely to be lending here hints of passion fruit and melon. An orange zest and woody marmalade flavouring for me pervading. A malty resinous hop bitterness putting in an appearance. A marmalade-infused fruitiness sailing out with a bitter grapefruit lingering. Served in very good nick. *Halstead is located roughly 2 miles east of the village of Gosfield and because so close, Halstead serves as the postal town for Gosfield’s addresses.
