| Hogan Sampling | ![]() | 10 Oct 2026 | Came with very good head and lasting lacing on this pale ale from Abyss Brewing which began boiling in 2016 in the cellar under the Pelham Arms pub in Lewes, East Sussex, before upgrading their operations in October 2021 to a historic old malthouse building in Davey’s Lane in Lewes. A very fruited first hit on this hazy New England-style straw-yellow coloured pale, named by one of the brewers after an elusive dream of a perfect session pint. A hoppy fruitiness rising from the brewers tossing three hop varieties into the mix: Amarillo, Cascade, and Idaho 7. Amarillo behind a citrus punch of grapefruit; Cascade emitting piney, resinous and earthy notes; and Idaho 7 delivering a sticky resin with a little stone fruit sweetness. For me a freshly zested citrus and deep forest pine wafting up my snout and, on my swallow, a fruity and resinous flavouring lingering. A dry malty bitterness in on the mix from its combination of malted barley, wheat and flaked oats. The malted barley providing a sweet grain base for the wheat and oats not behind too much sugar, just a velvety mouthfeel, before gliding down my gullet as comforting as a heavy woollen muffler on a frosty morning. A tuneful fruity note playing out. Served in good nick. |
