Visits Details

28 Feb 2026 (Hogan Sampling)
6th visit of Reading and its environs: A gem of an old-fashioned pub located in the High Street, Whitchurch-on-Thames, in Oxfordshire, and situated on the north bank of the River Thames directly opposite Pangbourne in Berkshire. Whitchurch-on-Thames has been in Oxfordshire for administrative purposes since the late 20th century. It serves locally brewed ales on 5 hand pumps, including beer from Amwell Springs in Cholsey and Rebellion Brewery in Marlow to quote the pub itself. There were three local cask ales available on a visit at the end of February 2026 and with the other two handpumps given over to a cider and a perry. The Greyhound is wet-led and has a L-shaped bar, low ceiling and plenty of beams and wooden panelling to transport you back in time to a bygone age. Its garden has a covered paved patio area as well as a grassed area with seating for many. Pop-up street food vendors operate on Friday and Saturday evening and on Sunday from 2pm according to the local CAMRA branch’s listing. The pub’s own website, as here listed in this entry, details live music on Sunday afternoons. It has been local CAMRA Pub of the Season for Winter 2023/2024 and is in the Good Beer Guide for 2026. Its latest website is as follows: https://www.thegreyhoundwhitchurchonthames.co.uk A pleasure to see some local real ales as on this visit but only time to sample one before moving on. Surviving old beamed ceilings, wooden panelling and open cast iron and brick fireplaces were a very pleasing sight. Prompt, friendly service early afternoon and full of what appear to be chilled-out locals catching up over their pints.

XT Brewing - No. 4 Session Amber3.80ExcellentVery good head and lacing and lasting on this session amber ale from XT Brewing Company, an independent brewery located at Notley Farm in Long Crendon, a village in west Buckinghamshire, situated on the border with Oxfordshire, and approximately 26.5 miles from Whitchurch-on-Thames. It was slightly murky and perhaps therefore unfined but all importantly tasted fine. A very dry hoppy first hit. A berry-fruited and malty note tuning up from its blend of English and Belgian malts lending it biscuity toffee blasts. A grassy bitterness leading to a dry hoppiness blowing its trumpet on its way out, and aided by its American Cascade and English Bramling Cross hops.

Rebellion - Witchstone4.50Not TriedWish I had tried it for its description of being dark and malty!
