2nd visit of the Hitchin outing: Busy for this predominantly wet-led corner-street Victorian pub on my early evening visit and aptly named. Prompt friendly service with four real ales on from this gem of an old-fashioned pub with original features such as the bar and beamed ceilings and open fire-places. Seating to be had after the walk from the Hitchin Rugby Club which was very welcome.

Tring - Side Pocket for a Toad3.60GoodPresented with very good head and lasting lacing on this straw-coloured light golden ale named after the old, local Hertfordshire saying that refers to something completely useless such as a "chocolate teapot". The Tring Brewery set up in 1992 in the market town of Tring, before relocating in 2010 to Dunsley Farm on London Road and located roughly half a mile south-east of Tring town centre. A gentle hoppiness rising. A fruitiness winning over with citrus rind from grapefruit and orange peel, and exuding a crisp, resinous pine flavouring from its exclusively used US Cascade hops packed with citrus and floral hints. A touch of caramel and cracker malt sweetness emerging on my palate and aided by its blend of Pale base malt, specifically Maris Otter barley, a touch of Crystal malt for sweetness and colour, and Wheat malt. A hoppy dry bitterness prevailing before sliding downwards. Served in very good nick with much conditioning apparent.

Early evening stop off on our way back from the beer festival. Very busy for this popular locals pub with three staff serving who coped admirably. The barmaid kindly offered us a reserved table with around 30 minutes before the attendees arrival as we were only staying for one.
