2nd visit of the outing: Busy for my mid-afternoon arrival and having met up with some Londoners on a day’s coach party outing. Seating to be had and two real ales on in this corner street old-fashioned pub in Hasting’s Old Town in All Saints’ Street. Prompt friendly service and a pew to be had not far from the bar to chat to the two fellow Londoners I knew would be visiting.

| Romney Marsh - Best Bitter | 4.00 | | Came with very good head and lasting lacing on this deep chestnut brown all-English session bitter from a family-run microbrewery based in Romney Marsh, Kent, and launched in May 2015. A slightly fruited first hit. A fruited bitterness prevailing with blackcurrant, citrus, spice and floral and herbal flavours entertaining my taste buds. A malty sweetness joining in with a biscuity, nutty and chocolatey note or two from its Pale, Munich, Light Crystal and Chocolate malts. A hoppy fruity maltiness sailing out and aided by its exclusively English-grown hops, Bramling Cross, from Kent paired either with Jester from Herefordshire or with the traditional East Kent Goldings. Served in top condition. |

My fifth visit of the outing as approaching early evening and almost time for fish and chips around the corner. Local craftsmen in 2014 gave it a facelift with wooden flooring and complete with handmade tables and chairs. Despite it being busy, I managed to be served quite readily. I even managed to prize into one of their handmade chairs. It lacks an outside space at the rear but has one at the front on part of the pavement that is not steeply going uphill at its side. The closest to the seafront of the Old Town and so the busiest visited of the day.

A bitterness rearing up and not in the least sweet like the odd Harvey's or Speckled Hen can be and so especially welcome. In its finale, a bitter fruitiness was moderate and lingering. |

I liked this pub back in its Harvey’s days and am even more impressed by the latest revamp. Others are clearly impressed too as it was standing room only when I visited shortly after noon on a Sunday. I have mislaid details of all the beers available on this visit.

The pub is found in Hastings, East Sussex, TN34 3BN.
In All Saints Street in the Old Town area, there was a Crown Inn in Hastings by Tudor times and it was established on the present site by the eighteenth century. Downgraded from an inn to merely a pub by the 1890s, it was rebuilt in its present (smaller) style in the 1920s. For many years a Watney's house, then briefly a Harveys tied house in the late twentieth century, it has now been relaunched as an independent pub, featuring locally sourced food and drink.
