25 Apr 2026 (Hogan Sampling)
1st visit of my outing to Woking and its environs: Prompt, friendly service at the bar for my early afternoon visit and whilst busy, a few spare seats and tables dotted about and good banter followed. A choice of three cask ales on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Big Smoke - Cosmic Dawn4.10GoodCame with good head and lacing and lasting all the way on this Surrey-brewed straw-coloured ale and described as a West Coast-style Extra Pale Ale. A fruited citrusy first bite with hints of passion fruit, grapefruit and citrus. An emerging tropical hoppiness with just a touch of maltiness from its Extra Pale and Maris Otter malts. A fruity note winning over with lychee, white wine and piney resin flavours presenting. A bitter hoppiness paddling out aided by its blend of Simcoe, Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin. It has been dry-hopped with the latter to accentuate its tropical and vinous flavours. Not overly fruited for my taste buds’ disapproval. Served in fine fettle. *The Big Smoke brewery was set up in 2014 in a converted stable block at the back of The Antelope pub in Surbiton, south-west London, before relocating brewing operations in 2019 to a larger, 5,000 square feet site at the Sandown Industrial Estate in Esher, Surrey.

The pub is found in Woking, Surrey, GU21 6JT.

This members’ club in Goldsworth Road, Woking, on our visit in late April 2026 was thriving with a good crowd in this spacious shed-like single-storey building just some 5 minutes from Woking’s High Street-side of Woking Station. As detailed by the Surrey/Hants Borders Branch of CAMRA, it is noted for its an ever-changing selection of cask ales often from local breweries with normally three on at a time and as demonstrated on this April 2026 visit. On this visit, it is located by walking through the driveway of an adjacent partially boarded-up 4-storey red-brick building which has planning permission for redevelopment. The club has been accoladed locally as CAMRA Club of the Year 2026 and it lets you in with a CAMRA membership card. Originally founded in 1921 as a mutual-aid society, named the Woking Railwaymen’s Sick & Benefit Club, it provided essential financial support to workers before the creation of the NHS. Following the 1923 railway amalgamation and later nationalisation, the organisation shifted its focus from welfare and insurance to sports and social activities. Today, it operates as the Woking Railway Athletic Club, a private social hub on Goldsworth Road that maintains its transport heritage through membership as a recognised social hub for real ale and local sports, namely darts and pool.

We have visited this pub once, seen 3 different beers and tried 1 of them.
