Visits Details

09 Jun 2006 (Ian)
On a baking hot Friday in June the place was not over run due to the start of the football World Cup. We got a table on the mezzanine level between the 2 bars. There were plenty of beers to try, but some of the newer beers had either gone or were being held back. The beer in general was in good condition and the staff were helpful and cheerful.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Sunburst4.80Excellent Pale gold with lasting white head. Citric hay aroma. Verging on the farty, but then good lemon curd style fruit kicks in with excellent hop finish.
Wolf - Straw Dogs4.50Excellent My beer of the festival. Gold with lasting white head. Attractive citric hop aroma. Good golden beer with good juicy malt. Very nice indeed, good balanced hop on end. Very drinkable and good for the summer.
Grand Union - Honey Porter4.90GoodBlack beer with dark brown edge, no real head. Bit of sourness, some blackberry , some choc. Black cherry on end is good. Not a huge honey presence if any. Good though.
Oakleaf (now see Fallen Acorn entries) - Heart of Oak4.50GoodCascade hoppy aroma, definitely US hop style. Chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Really good bitter. Bit of sherbert in mouth. Would like more of this. Nice enough with some caramel, but the hops are the real winner.
Wolf - Lavender Honey3.70GoodCopper with thin off white head. Aromatic, not huge lavender. Something flowery lurks there though. Good in mouth with tea like flavours and juicy malts. Good aromatic bitter.
Hambleton - Nightmare Porter5.00AcceptableVery dark brown/ruby with thin beige. Choccy porter. Quite nice with a bit of tartness on finish.
White Star - UXB Bitter3.80AcceptableGold with no head. Nice floral hop. Bit wet in mouth. Session bitter with good strong hop on finish. Nice enough golden beer, hops have a sherbert quality.
Eastwood & Sanders - Beyond The Pale4.00AcceptablePale gold with lasting white head. Hot hop and astringent aroma. Bit of metallic tea even. Astringent hop finish. Too much hop really. Very dry finish.
Oakleaf (now see Fallen Acorn entries) - Blake's Gosport Bitter5.20Acceptable Deep brown/ruby with bubbly beige head. Odd meaty aroma, bit like pate. Quite a strong bitter, some malt, but a bit syrupy in the end.
White Star - Capstan Full Strength6.00PoorVery dark brown/ruby colour with thin beige head. Dark, syrupy aroma, dark fruits, some liquorice in mouth. Tastes strong too. Doesn’t carry it too well. Some rubber. Couldn't finish it.
White Horse - Oxfordshire Bitter3.70PoorHazy gold with thin white head. Maybe coming to the end. Interesting tea hop aroma. Quite earthy in mouth with harsh muddy hop on end. Should be terrible but for some reason isn’t. Still, not great.
