It is high summer in Essex and the garden is proving popular. I prefer the cool of the interior, where a good lunch and a couple of pints provide the fuel for the hike across the fields to Newport railway station.

An ancient village pub in an idyllic location in north-west Essex. There are two main bars, one of which is more of a dining space, the other more suited to drinking. A small games room at the back, benches on the pavement at the front and a large, grassy garden to the rear.
