One of the few small, ‘stand-up’, after-work City pubs left. Not busy on this Monday evening.

I’m out on the town again with my 1973 pub guide, which describes this pub in exactly the way it remains today. It’s early evening on a Thursday and the pub is busy.

The pub is found in City, Central London, EC3M 7AN.

This pub in Lime Street was present by the 1830s and rebuilt in its present form in 1892. t is a small pub, mostly dedicated to vertical drinking. The most prominent external sign reduces the pub’s name to ‘Grapes’. Historically this was a Charrington’s house. Some interesting features have survived in the ground floor bar, including a frieze depicting foliage and bunches of grapes, set between the wood-panelled walls and the scalloped ceiling. Also a couple of floor mosaics and some bottle-glass windows. There is an upstairs restaurant. Converted to the Nicholson's format in 2023.

We have visited this pub 3 times, seen 7 different beers and tried 3 of them.
