Stewart - 80/- | 4.40 | ![]() | 6th beer: Very good head and lacing on this brown bitter from Loanhead, south of Edinburgh. A fruit-infused bitter first hit. A malty bitterness then rose up in the mouthfeel and a pleasant dry hoppiness then shone through to the end with many a fruit flavour to delight you with its subtle sweetness. Very much enjoyed and no doubt tried it here last year as well as recall its name. |
Brew York - Maris the Otter | 3.90 | ![]() | 3rd beer: Presented with some good head and lacing on this Yorkshire-brewed bitter. A very malty first hit emanating from its five different malts. A bitter malty mouthfeel and a hoppiness rising up and lasting from no less than three varieties of New World hops, the collective name for those from America, New Zealand and the southern hemisphere. A pleasantly malty hoppiness persisting. It reminded me of the week before in enjoying this in the River Ale House micropub and before it all got supped the following day by some of those thirsty Charlton FC home supporters. |
Jolly Boys' - Jolly Collier Porter | 5.00 | ![]() | 9th and final beer: Was going to try 10 but another ran out and so went for a whole half this time for my last one rather another third as with the others. This Yorkshire porter from Barnsley came with very good head and lacing and lasted well. A dry malty first hit. A maltiness to die for then presented itself and carried on with the odd bitterness bobbing up and down! Maris Otter malt and Crystal malt give it its caramel-toffee flavours. Black malt gives it a hint of burnt coffee and Coffee malt does give it hints of coffee and chocolate. The odd Fuggles hops also got in on the act of its making. A wonderful porter to go out on and marking another fine visit to the Bexley Beer Festival. It was a sterling effort made by all the volunteers to ensure it was such an enjoyable festival once again! |
Arundel - Castle | 3.80 | ![]() | 2nd beer: Good head and lacing on this bitter from north of Littlehampton at the Lyminster-based brewery. A very pleasantly bitter first hit. A dry moreish bitterness mixed with a hint of malt and fruit continued into the dry hoppy aftertaste. |
Sulwath - The Grace | 4.30 | ![]() | 7th beer: Presented with some head and lacing on this bitter from Castle Douglas, south-west of Dumfries in Scotland. A hoppy fruit-infused first hit. A dry oily hoppiness then presented itself in the mouthfeel from the three different hop varieties used. A pleasant bitterness lingered alongside a sweet fruity infusion from its caramel flavourings and Maris Otter and Crystal malts just gave it even more! |
Broken Drum Home Brew - Greebo Stout | 4.90 | ![]() | 4th beer: Was going to go for the Broken Drum micropub's Errol the Dragon bitter but alas this was one of the few on the second day of the three-day beer festival to have been entirely consumed and I sure with much enjoyment. Pleased therefore to have in its place Blackfen's Broken Drum's stout which came with good head and lacing and lasted. An unmistakably malty first hit. A hint of chocolatey maltiness then rose up in the mouthfeel and was an immense pleasure to savour. It was named after an infamous cat belonging to Nanny Ogg. Greebo is a cat in Terry Pratchett's Discworld books and is a foul-tempered one-eyed grey tomcat whose human, Nanny Ogg, insists against all the evidence that he is a sweet, harmless kitten! |
Titsey - Tail-End Charlie - mild | 3.40 | ![]() | My 1st beer: Good head and lacing. A very bitter first hit on this Tatsfield-based mild near Westerham in Kent. A dry and moreishly bitter mouthfeel and lasting. Rigg & Furrow - Bracken - bitter | 4.40 | ![]() | 5th beer: This bitter from Morpeth and some 20 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne was presented with good head and lacing. A malty and hoppy first hit combined. A fruitiness then erupted in the mouthfeel and a hoppiness rose up and lingered aided by its Brambling & Earnest hops. |
Born in the Borders (formerly Scottish Borders) - Red | 4.50 | ![]() | 8th beer: Said to be Scotland's original plough-to-pint brewery, it began brewing as Scottish Borders Brewery in 2011, using its own barley. Then became Born in the Borders Brewery, and then Born Brewery in 2020. This red ale was presented with good head and lacing and lasting. A very dry bitter first hit on this Scottish red from north-west of Jedburgh. A honey-infused hoppiness from the French hop, Barbe Rouge, and red and citrus fruited-infusions then rose up in the mouthfeel and lingered on. |
