Caught by a sudden thunderstorm whilst walking across Victoria Park, it seemed only sensible to come in here for shelter.

This pub really does have the loveliest garden, enhanced now by a small ‘Crazy Golf’ course. It was a fine evening sitting out here listening to some laid back live music.
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Single Hop Series: Equinox | 4.50 | | Amber in colour and slightly hazy. Excellent hops. |
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Hoppy Brown | 4.80 | | Hoppy brown ales really are the bestest beers. |
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Red Empire | 5.20 | | A bit redder and a bit sweeter than I recall from last time I drank this beer. |
10 May 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Lovely weather and Victoria Park is full of people in the late-afternoon. This pub is heaving and they have run out of any kind of food and a lot of the drinks – apparently it has been packed since opening time.
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Empire Stout | 5.00 | | Black and full-bodied and a bit dry. |
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Porter | 4.60 | | A very decent, dark Porter. |
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Red Empire | 5.20 | Not Tried

A pleasant walk here from Crate along the canal and across the park, ignoring the drizzle. Plenty of Sunday lunchers in at 3pm. I noticed for the first time that one of the cask beers is always available for £3 a pint.
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Klockwork Orange | 4.50 | | Pale gold, a little spicy, cloudy, wheaty. Not obviously orangey. |
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Spruce Almighty Pale | 5.10 | | A brown beer. Resinous in a piney, bathroom sort of way. |
Laine - Hackney (see also People's Pints) - RPA | 4.50 | Not Tried
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - ESB | 4.80 | Not Tried

Very quiet when I arrived in the early evening, but lots coming in towards quiz time. The garden is looking lovely and I was not surprised to hear that it has won another ‘Best Pub Garden in London’ award.
Laine - Hackney (see also People's Pints) - RPA | 4.50 | | RPA stands for Random Pale Ale, and apparently the randomness of this beer is that it has a different hop every time. Don’t know what hop was being used here, but it was very nice. |
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Old Timer Pale Ale | 5.00 | | A robust Pale Ale, with English rather than US hop tastes (I think, but I’m easily befuddled by such things). |
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - ESB | 4.80 | Not Tried
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - People's Pale Ale | 3.40 | Not Tried
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - IPA | 5.00 | Not Tried | Badged today as 4.6% |
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Red Empire | 5.20 | Not Tried

Mid-afternoon on a sunny Sunday and the pub is crowded. Almost everybody is in the extensive gardens. There was a time, years ago, when the garden fraternity here was around 90% local gangsters and villains, 10% casual passing cyclists and pram-pushers. The ratio is now reversed, plus a sprinkling of hipsters.
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Red Empire | 5.20 | | US-style Red Ale. Not too heavy, lots of hop flavours. |
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Summer Sessions | 3.50 | | Lightweight, easy-drinking, pale bitter. |
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - IPA | 5.00 | | Bitter citrus-fruit, tasty, golden IPA. |
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - ESB | 4.80 | Not Tried
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Espresso Stout | 5.00 | Not Tried
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - People's Pale Ale | 3.40 | Not Tried

Large establishment with a big garden area facing on to the park. Several in watching the start of the football but an equal number enjoying the outdoor drinking opportunities. I've only list the beers I had.
Laine - Hackney (see also People's Pints) - Sour to the People | 4.00 | | Not quite as sour as the one from Tap East. |
Laine - Hackney (see also People's Pints) - RPA | 4.50
Laine - Hackney (see also People's Pints) - IPA | 4.30

I was the only customer for a while in the early evening until my friend arrived. Disappointingly, there is still no beer ready from the in-house brewery. “By the end of the month” we were told. In the meantime the pub is being supplied by the Laines sister brewery in Brighton.
Laine - Ruby Sipper | 5.00 | | Dark and spicy and lifeless. |
Laine - London Porter | 4.70 | | Deep ruby red, smooth and fruity. Might be quite good, but in lacklustre condition here. |
Laine - Laine's Best | 4.00 | Not Tried
12 Dec 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Re-opening night for this pub which is now the third in the Laine’s chain of pub-breweries. The brew kit looks good, but none of the home-brew is quite ready tonight and there are three beers from Laine’s in Brighton and three or four guests.
Hackney - Winter Warmer | 5.00 | | Full-bodied, winter beer. |
Laine - Ruby Sipper | 5.00 | | Pleasant, Christmas-spiced beer. Not over-done. |
Laine - Laine's Best | 4.00 | | A rather ordinary bitter. |

This very large pub was nearly empty when I visited early evening on a Thursday. The paucity of real ale was explained by ‘lines being cleaned’, leading to this being a rather short visit.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Truman’s Lazarus | 4.10 | | The fervent hope of local drinkers is that the opening later this summer of Truman’s Hackney brewery will lead to an upsurge in beer quality. The label for this beer promised “Golden and Hoppy”. It was golden in colour but thin and insipid. |
