Early evening visit after a Lord's county cricket match. Had been told this was a pub run by one of the few remaining characters but he was not in house tonight. Tried a seat by the extraordinarily low bar counter upstairs then into the darker lower bar.

Lunchtime and fairly quiet, friendly welcome with an amusing response if my £20 note for 2 pints covered the cost. Not for the thrifty minded at £5 a pint.

Late afternoon and very busy outside as the sun had decided to shine. My first visit here inspired by a recent newspaper article then reading Mr Harris's review, I'm very impressed alas no F words or bossy barmaids today. I felt ever so tall ordering my pint at the bar.

All London pub-goers should visit this pub every now and then, just to remind themselves of how pubs used to be. Tonight, the old-fashionedness extends to a rude and bossy barmaid: “Don’t stand there”, “Don’t go upstairs”, “Go and sit over there”, “Hang your coat up”. Every sentence punctuated by F-words. I haven’t been treated like this in a pub since I was a student. On another day I might just find it mildly amusing; but not tonight and I soon drink up and go.

The pub is found in Belgravia, Central London, SW1X 8ED.

Incredibly quirky pub in Kinnerton Street, like a rabbit burrow and hugely eclectic mix of bric-a-brac throughout the pub. Fair mix of locals and visitors, just Adnams beers on but pleasant enough. 5 attractive china handpumps upstairs but only 3 are piped for real ales. Upstairs bar height must be one of the lowest in the UK. Steep steps lead to the lower bar. Run nowadays by the characterful Kevin Moran.

We have visited this pub 6 times, seen 6 different beers and tried 4 of them.
