A new pub for me although I did work in the area in the early 1990s when the pub was trading as the Stick of Rock. Worthy of a visit these days.

All tables taken in the early evening – always seems busy here – but I found a perch against the bar counter.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wylam - Puffing Billy5.50PoorI do like a sour beer, really I do. But I don’t think this one was meant to be sour, and the sourness jarred with the smoke and the underlying sweetness of the dark malt. I couldn’t finish my pint.

Early evening, post-curry visit. Nice atmosphere in here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Williams Brothers - 80/-4.20GoodSweetish, dark, beer with some roasted barley – but slightly lighter and hoppier (and more to my personal liking) than I remember the style.

I had not really planned to come in here, but took a real soaking in a Biblical downpour whilst window shopping in Brick Lane and ran here for shelter.
BeerABVScoreNotes
S43 (formerly Sonnet 43) - Brown Ale4.70AcceptableBrown in colour and a bit turbid. Very fruity. A little past its best I suspect.
Windsor & Eton - Eton Boatman4.30Not Tried

Dave R and I moved on here from the Crown & Shuttle, two pubs which just months ago seemed long gone, but both now back in service. It was absolutely jammed in here, with more and more crushing in. Rather than the expected Hipster crowd, it was a very smartly fashionable, mostly female crowd – looking like some sort of after-show party associated with London Fashion Week. Dave and I were easily the ugliest people present.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Siren Craft - Under Current4.50ExcellentA well-hopped beer, the undercurrent of sweetness coming from an element of oatmeal in the grist.
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Wells / Dogfish Head DNA4.50ExcellentAn unlikely collaboration beer between Charles Wells and the respected US brewer Dogfish Head. This is a full-blown US-style pale ale with fruity hop tastes.
Dark Star - Porter5.50Not Tried

Not quite as crowded as on my last visit and I had a better chance for a look around. They have some interesting artwork on the wall by the same artist whose work features at the Exmouth Arms, EC1. Light levels kept very low in here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hackney - American Pale Ale4.50ExcellentAmber-coloured. Full-bodied, with fruity hop tastes. In great condition.

Great to see this pub back with us, and it was very busy on an early Sunday evening. Four cask ales were available – I’ve managed to forget the identity of the fourth.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Windsor & Eton - Treetops4.40GoodA decent, if relatively low-strength stout.
Buxton - American Rye4.30GoodHops and rye in good combination.

The pub is found in Bethnal Green, Greater London, E2 7GD.

A former Truman’s Brewery pub that was present here by the opening of the nineteenth century. In 1993 the pub was trading as the Stick of Rock, having been acquired by Belhaven, but it had closed by 1994. Nineteen years of closure (with use as a leather goods retailer and as a hostel) came to an end in February 2013 when the pub was re-opened by Bar Works. It had been known for its ornate, interior tiling – some of which survives in rather battered form. Now has an island bar and a small yard at the rear. there is also a basement cocktail bar.

We have visited this pub 8 times, seen 22 different beers and tried 10 of them.
