Beer | ABV | Score | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Pitfield's - Hewitt's Urbane Gorilla | 4.30 | My current understanding is that Hewitt’s are brewing their beers at Ha’penny Brewery in Ilford (although I may be wrong on this). A red ale with fruity, but bitter rather than sweet, malt tastes. | |
Wentworth - Imperial Ale | 3.80 | More feeble than you would expect from a beer of this name. A regular, session bitter. | |
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - IPA – Ian & Paul’s Ale | 3.50 | An IPA in the East Anglian-style typified by Greene King. Closer to being a light mild than to being an India Pale Ale. Fruity malt tastes. | |

The pub is found in Chingford, Greater London, E4 7EA.
An historic pub, that was present here by 1732. The pub sold Truman’s beers from the early nineteenth century and by the late-twentieth century was part of the huge Allied Breweries estate, branded as a Taylor Walker pub. Various themes and chains followed in quick succession, until acquisition of the pub by Stonegate in 2011. The olde worlde charm of times past is now replaced by a bright and modern feel to the large, single-room interior. Ivor Novello is listed amongst famous former customers. Today, the pub provides a wide choice of real ales. Unusually for a London pub, most customers enter through the rear door from the car park, rather than through the front door from the street.
We have visited this pub twice, seen 14 different beers and tried 4 of them.
