16 Jul 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Early Monday evening and there is a limited cask beer range available as a nod to the hot weather. It should have been even more limited if my pint was anything to go on.
Neptune - Big Sur | 4.50 | | A hazy, amber-coloured beer that, I assume, is an APA. I was so cross that my request for a top-up of a short measure had been ignored that I didn’t immediately notice what poor condition this was in. I didn’t finish the pint. |
Kent - Clerkenwell Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Neptune - Equinox IPA | 5.20 | Not Tried
10 Jan 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening visit.
Fyne - The Cardinal. | 4.50 | | Deep red in colour, bordering on brown. Burnt caramel malt base with tropical fruit-type hops on top. Long, bitter finish. |
Fat Cat - Marmalade Cat | 5.50 | | A heavy, sticky, bitter, orangey beer. |
Fyne - Vital Spark | 4.40 | Not Tried
Kent - Clerkenwell Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Green Hopped IPA | 6.50 | Not Tried
22 Nov 2016 (Stephen Harris)
A Euostar train got me into London just too late to be able to attend tonight’s Leyton Orient match. Normally I would consider this a disaster, but in present circumstances I should probably be pleased not to have been there. I holed up in here in the warm instead to follow the game on Twitter.
Salopian - Choir Porter | 4.50 | | An excellent, rich, black, smooth Porter. |
Salopian - Propaganda | 5.00 | | Golden. A strong Pale Ale with citrus hop flavours. |
Parkway (formerly Glastonbury Ales) - Thriller Rare Cappuccino Porter | 5.00 | | A black Porter, very heavily flavoured with coffee. Too heavily for me. |
Parkway (formerly Glastonbury Ales) - Hedge Monkey | 4.60 | Not Tried

Gun - Scaramanga Extra Pale Ale | 3.90 | Not Tried

Early evening and not crowded.
Salopian - Kashmir | 5.50 | | Golden. A heavy and thick IPA with nice fruity hop flavours. |
Salopian - Spiral | 4.00 | | A full-bodied Golden Ale with fruity and piney hop flavours. |
Hawkshead - ITI (little NZPA) | 3.50 | | Exceptionally pale. Nice hop aroma and bags of hop flavours with a long, bitter finish. Decent body too for its strength. |
Salopian - Golden Thread | 5.00 | Not Tried
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
First Chop Brewing Arm - SUP | 3.90 | Not Tried

25 Oct 2016 (Stephen Harris)
A nice, relaxed feeling in here tonight; too early in the week for much City excess.
Saltaire - Hop #256 | 5.00 | | A golden beer featuring a new hop variety that does not yet have a name. It delivers a big, bitter hop hit that is both citrusy and quite earthy. |
Dancing Duck - Waddle it be? | 4.50 | | Very pale. Hop-filled. Dry and bitter. |
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Lord Marples | 4.00 | Not Tried
Kent - Enigma | 5.50 | Not Tried
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
First Chop Brewing Arm - HOP | 4.10 | Not Tried

31 May 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Ground floor bar busy after work, but tables available in the pleasant cellar bar.
Fyne - Lismore | 5.10 | | A golden, hoppy beer. Somewhere between a Blonde and an IPA in style. |
Partizan - X Ale | 5.70 | | Very pleased to find this beer here on cask. It is a red/brown coloured Bitter based upon a 1915 Courage Brewery recipe and dry-hopped with Cluster. As good a Best Bitter as you will find. |
Fyne - Piper's Gold | 3.80 | Not Tried
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Blackjack - The River | 4.80 | Not Tried
Blackjack - The Pokies | 3.60 | Not Tried
Blackjack - Four of a Kind | 6.20 | Not Tried
09 Mar 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Mid to late evening, busy throughout. Some sort of Roosters Brewery thing going on it seems.
Tiny Rebel - Cwtch | 4.60 | | I couldn’t resist this great beer. It’s not often that my taste buds are in tune with those of the GBBF Champion Beer of Britain judges, but this year they are. Great fresh hop tastes cutting through sweet sticky malt. Could have stuck with this all evening. |
Rooster's - Yardstick | 3.70 | | Golden in colour. A very nice, hop-forward Pale Ale, or Session IPA or whatever these type of beers are called this week. |
Blackjack - Stout | 5.00 | | A rich, dark, dry, roasty Stout. |
Rooster's - Cream | 4.70 | Not Tried
Rooster's - Astro | 4.30 | Not Tried
Rooster's - Buckeye | 3.50 | Not Tried
Rooster's - Baby-Faced Assassin | 6.10 | Not Tried
02 Dec 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening visit, sat in the downstairs area with Robert S – meanwhile the ground floor bar became very busy indeed.
Dark Star - Rockhead | 6.00 | | Dark Star don’t do things by halves and this is a really good, strong, flavourful American Brown Ale. |
Brewster's - Hop a Doodle Doo | 4.30 | | A very-nice, copper-coloured, full-bodied Bitter with significant hop content. |
Brewster's - Decadence | 4.40 | | Golden, dry-ish and hoppy. A bit hazy, giving a slight yeasty edge to the taste. |
Boggart - Rum Porter | 4.60 | Not Tried
Marble - Chocolate Marble | 5.50 | Not Tried
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Dancing Duck - Amberillo | 4.50 | Not Tried | Ran out. |
Fyne - Richard Benson | 5.00 | Not Tried

Re-opened for around three weeks now, this pub brings the ‘Craft’ concept into the City of London. Very much a City Boy clientele tonight (for whom you can charge pretty much any price you like for the beer – they don’t care) but they are not over-powering. Two more beers were available, but it was difficult to read the pumpclips in the dim light.
Tyne Bank - Simcoe Dollar | 5.00 | | Just what the doctor ordered. A crisp, amber-coloured pint with strong, bitter hop flavours. |
Fyne - Lemeringue | 4.20 | | Described as a ‘Lemon Meringue Golden Stout’. It is, um, chocolaty, pale and, er, lemony, and tastes a bit of meringue. Either the brewers at Fyne are completely bonkers or they are geniuses. |
Fyne - Ragnarök | 7.40 | | A very strong, souped-up version of the Fyne Brewery’s excellent Jarl IPA. |
Marble - Pint (was 3.9%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Fyne - Hurricane Jack | 4.40 | Not Tried
First Chop Brewing Arm - CHA | 5.00 | Not Tried
09 Jul 2013 (Stephen Harris)
I knew nothing of this place until it appeared as the venue for tonight’s CAMRA Branch meeting, which took place in the downstairs room. Unfortunately there had been some sort of mix up and they were not expecting us – so just one firkin of beer to split between 20 thirsty members.
Elgood's - Golden Newt | 4.10 | | Refreshing enough but served a little green, with the full flavour not really developed. |
