25 May 2026 (Hogan Sampling)
2nd visit of my outing to Woking and its environs: Quietly ticking over with just a few in for my mid-afternoon arrival and met with friendly, prompt service at the bar. Predominantly laid out for diners save for the front bar area. Belonging to Pearmain Pubs since 2008 and which also operates three other pubs, all located in Surrey, each is said by the company to be independently-owned and individually-styled. Here at the Red Lion, very much a contemporary style with modern art adorning the walls and perhaps slightly incongruous with the age of the building itself. Comfortable seating to be had at a low-level table not from the bar counter. To the rear is an extensive garden which I visited to admire and busy due to the sun shining throughout with nothing more than a pleasant breeze.

Hogs Back - Tongham TEA (previously T.E.A.)4.20GoodThis came with very good head and lacing and lasting throughout on this local Tongham TEA (Traditional English Ale) from Manor Farm in Tongham, Surrey, and about 12 miles away from Horsell. The brewery was established in 1992 and is housed in 18th-century farm buildings that once held wheat and cattle. The brewery got its name from the nearby Hogs Back ridge, a local geological feature that resembles a sleeping hog. A malty first bite on this lively tawny copper coloured bitter. A gentle lemony hoppiness rising and no doubt derived from the brewery’s own on-site hop garden established in 2014. Its 100% Surrey-grown Fuggles hops lending this ale a firm prevailing bitterness. A biscuity maltiness winning over from its English malted barley and behind its toffee-flavoured malty infusions. A dry hoppiness lingering on my palate before its descent down my gullet. Served in top condition.
