With the new owner in place much more friendly.
Rudgate - Ruby Mild | 4.40 | | Fruity mild. Good condition. |
Camerons - Tontine | 4.10 | | Nice. Roasty stout on keg. |
Taylor Illingworth - Chinook | 4.00 | | OK. Not convinced Chinook is a good choice for a single hop beer. Very bitter but only gentle aroma. |
Taylor Illingworth - Milkshake IPA | 5.70 | | Not to my taste. Unconvinced that beer and milk are a sound combination. |

Much improved under the new ownership. Does get very busy.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Chiron | 5.00 | | A liitle frayed round the edges. Not clear why. |

15:00 After a very pleasant visit to the Rat Race we continued our micro-pub trail with a visit here. Arrived dead on opening time, shutters were closed as we got out of the cab. Soon opened though. The owner came out and told us his chiller wasn't working so he couldn't open. I said we had come a long way to visit his pub at which point he lost it. He started ranting and raving about his problems in a very aggressive manner. We beat a hasty retreat. Has rather put me off making long journeys to one-man band operations.

Busyish. Two Milestone beers which were avoided and my Beer of The Week.
Brass Castle - Hoptical Illusion | 4.80 | | Really fresh and hoppy. Unfined and brewed with sorghum. |
Milestone - Rich Ruby | 4.50 | Not Tried
Milestone - Black Pearl | 4.30 | Not Tried

Very busy but we struggled to find an interesting ale and resorted to bottled Punk. Do wish these new wave micro pubs would look at the quality of what they're ordering as well as the colour and 'newness' of the beer.
Black Paw - Dark Seam | 5.00 | | Uninteresting rather thin porter. |
Black Paw - Black Paw IPA | 5.00 | | Thin and underwhelming. |
Captain Cook - Resolution | 3.70 | | Badly constructed, crystal malt dominated dark golden ale. |
Black Paw - Polar Paw | 4.40 | Not Tried

Full to capacity well before closing time there seemed to be a good mix of regulars and new faces. In a real ale desert this is very welcome addition and it's success demonstrates that people will visit a conversation led pub offering real ales. It does seem though to be following the direction of offering as many different beers as possible. Possibly, at the expense of absolute beer quality. I tend to think Martin Hillier's original model of choosing good beer and bringing the best out of it by skilled serve has more mileage.
Mordue - IPA | 5.10 | | Beer by numbers. Maybe 2* really. |
Kent - Pale | 4.00 | | This should have had a real hop drive but was muted. Some graininess was the predominant characteristic. |
Magic Dragon (formerly New Plassey) - Deep Porter | 4.50 | | Awful. Dark brown, thin head, dominated by 'Caramac' there was no hint of Cascade hops. |
Arkwright's - Open All Hours | 4.20 | Not Tried
