Visits Details

20 Feb 2013 (Philip Pirrip)
Lunchtime - a pre-arranged visit as usually limited opening hours. The cask beer ran out so we had to move to a few Otter bottles later. A unique experience and a must do for any lover of pubs in times past. My lack of manual dexterity and spatial awareness made playing with the metal puzzles here fruitless full stop.

Upon arriving the pub was closed. However, the landlady, Vera, opened up for us. She said she did not get much business and usually did not open at lunchtimes. This pub is a real gem. Vera is full of local information. The table in the bar was covered in various puzzles which kept us amused as we tried to solve them. Not much aided by the Otter!!

Otter - Bitter3.60GoodAlthough served from a polypin this was very drinkable. A good amber colour, light bodied and uncomplicated ale with a bitter aftertaste.

The pub is found in Luppitt, Devon, EX14 4RT.

Very remote location some 4 to 5 miles north out of Honiton into hilly country this pub is located on a steep hill in the village. It consists of two small rooms attached to a farm. The "main" bar consists of one table, at which you could seat six people, a counter, and a shelf where beer is served from two polypins. There is another un-barred seated drinking area to the left upon entrance but this is rarely used. Run by the Wright family for a very long time the licensee was Vera M. Wright known as Mary who alas has passed away. One of the last if not the last true farmyard public house in the country is a must to visit but has very limited opening hours. Conversation on local matters in the local dialect is just worth shutting up and listening to as a total delight. For many years now the beer served is from the local Otter Brewery. Nothing changes here and long may it last. As of summer 2021 closed with no evidence of likely re-opening. In early 2023 the owners are said to be investigating to viably re-open after significant repairs are effected.

We have visited this pub twice, seen 1 beer and tried it.
