18:30 The fourth member of our party met us at Barnham Junction and we than came here. This turned out to be the worst visit of the two day outing. The bar counter was fully occupied by drinkers, and the handpumps were situated in the narrowest part of the right hand room. Getting to see the beers on offer proved difficult and caused a degree of ill-feeling from the bar stool brigade. When we did get served the beers were substantially short measured, on asking for a top up we were told that a legal pint was filled to the bottom of the registration mark. The top up was eventually given but the whole experience of getting served a pint of beer in this pub was not pleasant. My previous visit here in 2001 was a very different experience when the former Landlord & Landlady were still here (the Landlady eventually clocked up 47 years retiring in 2011) when I was given a Friary Meux sign.

The pub is found in Barnham, West Sussex, PO22 0AS.

Built c.1750 by William Murrell as a farmhouse and became a pub in 1866. This pub is little altered in 40 years. The public bar on the right was two small rooms in the distant past and retains very old half panelling with some wall benches and a c100 year old curved bar counter at the rear. The fireplace, front counter and two small bar backs are at least 40 years old. The middle area was originally an off sales so a partition has been lost and behind the servery is the cellar with casks on stillage which was at one time the living quarters. On the left is a small lounge with a vestibule entrance, very old half panelling and two old fireplaces – you can see where there was in the distant past a partition that split the room in two and the curved counter of 40+ years replaced a hatch. The current bar front is constructed to resemble a barrel complete with hoops and staves.
