Wasted visit, the barman said the closing times were temperamental, as in closing early when not enough custom. Tonight was such a case.

12:00 Having a ride round the southern parts of the Overground and stopped here for a drink. I first came here when the Thameslink service from Kings Cross started in May 1988 when it was part of the Firkin chain. Just a few in, pleasant place for a drink.

Evening until close. Just 2 small groups left in. Staff scurrying to do the close down jobs. Amused to see some brown handwritten paper tabs hanging below the fizz fonts with brief description and likening them to celebrities e.g. Beck's Vier to Boris Becker, Heineken to Ruud Gullit, Peroni to Sophia Loren. Goodness gracious me.

The pub is found in Denmark Hill, Greater London, SE5 8BB.
In Windsor Walk down the side of Denmark Hill railway station, it used to be the ticket hall of the station, burned down in 1980. Opened as a pub in 1984 as the Phoenix & Firkin, the chain was bought in turn by Allied and then Bass and the pub was later renamed O'Neill's for a while. Spacious bare-boarded interior with a long bar made from a mahogany tree, high raftered ceiling, small gallery at one end accessed via a spiral staircase. 4 handpumps.
