Evening. Eureka, for once the pub did not smell of food and cooking. One arm of the bar counter has half a dozen tall imposing keg fonts, one of which was selling Fuller's 5.3% keg IPA at £5.50 pp!!!

Early evening. The whole place reeked like a cafe food outlet so I was out before I was in. This must vie with the Lord Nelson as the most changed for the worse pub in Brighton.

Evening. Came in mainly to wind myself up to see 3 Gale's beers failing to declare their true Chiswick provenance.

Evening. Immediately hit by the stench of chip fat and burning meat reminiscent of a kebab shop! I do like the large green metal YHA triangular sign and the enamel East Street Mayfield Post Office sign.

15:30 Lunch stop. Like the rest of the pubs, quiet. The sunny weather must have been keeping people on the beach.

Very busy. Very nice pub. Had a wide feeling, like a playing field or a front room in a 1970's house in the hills.

Saturday early lunchtime and there was a good range of locals in. Definitely felt to me like a good place to come for a session. Mix of Gales and Fullers beers with a guest on too.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - Gale's HSB4.80ExcellentVery deep chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Rich malty ESB. Choccy malts, very attractive and enormously drinkable. Dry malt aroma, slight spicey pepper hop on finish.
Gale's - Butser3.40GoodFirst time I've had this beer. Clear amber colour with thin lasting off white head. Pleasant session bitter with decent tingling hop on finish. Some hop/malt aroma. Easy drinking in mouth, subtle decent citrus lmeony hop finish. Not huge flavour, but happily drinkable.
Hook Norton - Hooky Bitter3.60AcceptableCopper colour with thin white head. Some of that Hook Norton distinctive flavour. Earthy bitter. Bit watery in body. Decent hoppy bit on finish. Lacks a bit of body. Citrus flavours are fine.

The pub is found in Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 4AD.

Former Gale's pub. Traditional corner pub in the Bohemian North Laines area of Brighton, south of Trafalgar Street. The central L-shaped bar serves one room. There are lots of early 20th century tin and enamel signs and tins on the walls. The wooden bar is mirrored by the bare wooden floorboards. This feels like a comfortable locals' pub that is welcoming to passers by as well. 8 handpumps.

We have visited this pub 19 times, seen 38 different beers and tried 13 of them.
