18:15 Pre curry drink. Pavement was full but inside was less so and we got a table with ease. I mentioned to my wife that this was a proper pub. Soon after a couple of city types came in sat near us and made exactly the same observation.

Early opening today on account of Leyton Orient’s appearance at Wembley Stadium, and I join a group of around 70 supporters here at 11am for a few beers to sharpen our appetite for the game. In many ways it is the best part of the day in fact.

Back in east London after a day at the races, our Stag Night numbers are swollen and we have several pints and a generally jolly time in the street outside this little pub, before going for a very unsatisfactory and over-priced Brick Lane curry at ‘Alladin’.

I joined a mid-evening CAMRA social here, with a dozen or more members present. A large buffet miraculously appeared, although I was unable to do it justice being full of curry on arrival.

A good crowd of locals and some Italian tourists in the early evening.

Crouch Vale - Brewers Gold4.00ExcellentA great malt and hops blend which always seems to taste extra good in this pub.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Truman's Emperor4.50AcceptableA very ordinary, brown bitter which does not live up to its name. Tangy Crystal Malt taste.

Monday is a good evening to visit the Pride as i) it is not infested with City Boys out for a pre- or post-curry pint, and ii) it is vinyl 45s night. The irony that this pub, a former Ind Coope bastion but standing in the shadow of the former Truman’s Brewery, should be selling a beer called Truman’s was not lost on the older regulars.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crouch Vale - Brewers Gold4.00ExcellentThe beer of choice here – always excellent.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Truman's Swift & Swallow3.90AcceptablePeople are still saying that the Truman’s beers are currently brewed at Everard’s, so that is where I’m listing this one. A golden, spring beer. Similar is taste to the Truman’s Runner, perhaps with an extra handful of hops.

I wanted to give this another go as the pub has a good reputation and I wanted some Crouch Vale Brewers Gold. Smallish bar serves 2 rooms. Red carpet, 5 handpumps, pictures of old local interest on walls. Good mix of locals talking about the pub and horse racing.

The pub is found in Spitalfields, Central London, E1 5LJ.

Down a side street off Brick Lane, this is a popular pub and one of the regular outlets for Crouch Vale beers from Essex including the award winning Brewers Gold. Central bar serves an L shaped room with lots of dark wood and red velour. Established before 1891, this pub was historically called the Romford Arms and was owned by Ind Coope and a reminder of these days survives in the form of a brewery mirror in the snug bar. The name change to Pride of Spitalfields came in the early 1980s. The pub survived an arson attack in the early 2000s.

We have visited this pub 21 times, seen 14 different beers and tried 9 of them.
