15 Jul 2012 (Blair)
Came by with the family for a couple of drinks before retiring to the hotel. Pub was rammed in both bars and we had to squeeze onto a table with a few others. Great atmosphere to the place, full of conversation.
Kelham Island (probably brewed by Thornbridge now) - King of the Rocket Men | 4.50 | | Pale and very hoppy with quite a bitter finish to it. Pretty good. |
07 Jul 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Busy as ever on a Saturday afternoon.
Salamander - Black Eyed Boy Stout | 4.50 | | Full bodied roasty stout with a dry, roast finish. My score 16/20. |
Welbeck Abbey - King Tom | 4.40 | | A ruby/orange bitter with an interesting mix of toffee malt flavours and aromatic hops giving a full flavoured beer. Fairly dry finish. My score 16/20. |
09 Jun 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Bustling as ever on a Saturday afternoon.
Gundog (re-named now see Acton Ales entry) - Magnificent Seven | 3.80 | | Well balanced pale bitter. My score 15/20. |
19 May 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Busy on a Saturday afternoon.
Clark's (sometimes shown as Westgate Brewery) - 4 Coffee | 4.20 | | A coffee mild with very few hops but lots of roasted malt and coffee flavours. Dark brown in colour. My score 16/20. |
18 Feb 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Clark's (sometimes shown as Westgate Brewery) - Senior Moment | 3.80 | | A misbrew that turned out dark amber/ruby with a bittersweet fruity flavour. The finish is rather dry. My score 14/20. |
Exit 33 (formerly The Brew Company then Sky's Edge) - Evil Genius | 4.70 | Not Tried
Rooster's - Astro | 4.30 | Not Tried
17 Dec 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Another busy pub with pre-Christmas pub crawlers.
Abraham Thompson - Porter | 4.20 | | Vary rare to find this as far south as this. An excellent malty porter with roast coffee and chocolate flavours and a smooth mouthfeel. Fairly fruity finish. My score 17/20. |
Two Roses - Heron Porter with Cherry Brandy | 4.20 | | Dark brown porter with good malt character and a real cherry kick in the finish. My score 16/20. |
Clark's (sometimes shown as Westgate Brewery) - Steffi's Stout | 5.20 | | Full bodied roasty stout with a fruity hop character with hints of pineapple. Another example where the Japanese Sorachi hop actually enhances the flavour of a beer - only seems to work in dark, malty ones. My score 16/20. |
19 Nov 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Fyne - Cherry Stout | 6.00 | | Subtle chery flavour does not dominate but remains in the background allowing the roast malt flavours to present the main flavour. My score 16/20. |
Empire - John Tracy | 4.30 | | Pale, hoppy beer with good malt balance and citrus hop flavours in the finish. My score 15/20. |
08 Oct 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Nook - Cherry Stout | 5.20 | | A veritable mix of flavours in this with strong roast and coffee flavours competing with hoppy and cherry flavours. The cherry flavour wins in the finish. My score 16/20. |
Rudgate - Lubelski | 4.30 | | Very pale and well balanced single hop beer. Good crisp citrus flavours and a dryish finish. My score 15/20. |
01 Oct 2011 (Blair)
Gorgeous day outside, in fact hottest October day in history. Sat in the beer garden and had a lovely lunch washed down with some great beer. Perfect!
Timothy Taylor - Dark Mild | 3.50 | | Very quaffable mild. Light roasted flavour with a nice body to it. |
Kelham Island (probably brewed by Thornbridge now) - Best Bitter | 3.80 | | Slightly disappointing if I'm honest. Not that much going on, light in flavour and a bit watery. |
10 Sep 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Becoming quieter late on a Saturday afternoon.
Welbeck Abbey - St. James | 4.00 | | A ruby coloured bitter with a very dry and astringent taste with extreme bitterness without being all that hoppy. Rather strange. My score 11/20. |
