Visits Details

05 Jun 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Most people outside on a hot Saturday afternoon so plenty of room in the air conditioned interior.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Fyne - Cairn Dhu 60/-3.30ExcellentA good find here, a rare Scottish 60/- mild ale. True to syle with low hoppiness and a good sweet malty character. My score 16/20.
Westerham - Single Hop Cascade4.00ExcellentAnother in the Single Hop Varietal series, this is Westerham's take on the likes of Hophead and JHB and the best I have tasted so far. An excellent juicy hop flavour balanced perfectly by sweeter toffee malt flavours to give a good balance of flavours. My score 16/20.
Marston's - Merrie Monk4.50GoodRed/brown mild with sweetish fruity apple flavours and little or no hoppiness. My score 15/20.
01 Jun 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Moles - Double MM Mild3.60GoodStill finding milds although it is now June. This is a dark brown mild with a slightly hoppy and bitter character. Some malt to counteract, but the finish is fairly dry and bitter. My score 15/20.
27 May 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Salamander - Anubis3.90AcceptableDark brown mild with rather too much hop bitterness for a mild. Some maltiness evident however. My score 14/20.
23 May 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Foxfield - Cabin Porter4.00ExcellentDark brown porter with good malty body. Some hop bitterness in the finish. My score 16/20.
19 May 2010 (Flying.geordie)
Busy lunchtime visit.
BeerABVScoreNotes

Breconshire - Bishop Gower's Well4.10Excellent
Leadmill - Mash Tun Bitter3.60Good

BeerABVScoreNotes
Rowton - Golden Mild3.50GoodDoes what it says, slightly bitter finish. My score 15/20.
18 May 2010 (Flying.geordie)
Early afternoon visit and a few people in the bar.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Empire - Time For Bed4.20Excellent
Batemans - Miss Russia4.10Good
13 May 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Second visit of the evening, thinning out a bit at 9.15pm.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Bowland - Kettledrum4.20ExcellentAmber bitter with a good citrus hop flavour and good malt balance. My score 16/20.
13 May 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Very busy but as a fine day most people outside.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Bridgehouse - Dark Mild3.60ExcellentBraved the crowds specially for this and was not disappointed. Total chocolate malt bomb, beige head and lingering chocolate malt finish. Just like Batemans DM used to be like in the 80s/90s. My score 17/20.
11 May 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Pictish - Black Diamond MIld3.50ExcellentAn explosion of dark malty flavours in the initial hit, with coffee, chocolate and toast all mixed in. Towards the finish slight fruity citrus notes creep in before the roast flavours linger in the finish. My score 16/20.
Banks's - Hanson's Classic Mild3.30ExcellentAnother resurrected brew from the Marston's stable, this is a dark brown typical West Midlands mild, sweet and malty with little or no hopping. My score 16/20.
Bridgehouse - Barnstormer4.40GoodQuite sweet and malty with caramel and toffee flavours with a hint of diacetyl. Little hop character to speak of. My score 15/20.

Famous pub opposite Borough Market in Stoney Street. Central bar has many beers which change on a regular basis and are mostly from UK micros. Can be extremely busy. Refurbishment some time ago and now there is one main room with a side area with seating as well. Many customers use the pavement outside to stand and enjoy their drinks.
