Visits Details

15 Jan 2013 (Martin the Mildman)
Seeme to be getting back on track now with a good crowd in on a Tuesday evening, usual mix of locals and Tuesday club members.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crouch Vale - Blackwater Mild3.70GoodQuite a bitter taste to this from roast and chocolate malt. Some fruity hop in the finish. My score 15/20.
Franklins - English Garden Golden Ale3.80GoodGood citrus hop character to this pale golden ale. Dryish, citrus finish. My score 15/20.
19 Dec 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening until close.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Windsor & Eton - Conqueror 10757.40ExcellentRan out before I ordered but scrounged last knockings from the pump pull for a third of a half
Aylesbury (ABC) - Hop Harvest3.80ExcellentA green hopped beer. The intensity of hop oils only came through when the pint was well down in the glass
Hanlons (formerly O'Hanlon's) - Goodwill Bitter5.00ExcellentA stronger version than previously. Intriguingly spiced with flavours I could not name
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)3.40Not Tried

27 Nov 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
A few of the former Tuesday crowd in here, but something seemed to be lacking here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Summer Wine (SWB) - Resistance Dark Mild3.70ExcellentStrong roasty toasty malt character giving a bitter coffee flavour to the beer. Low hop character and a rather dry, roasty finish. My score 16/20.
08 Nov 2012 (Philip Pirrip)

28 Aug 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Very quiet on a Tuesday late afternoon without the usual buzz associated with this pub.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Titanic - Mild3.50GoodMalty mild with a slightly dry character. Not as good a sample as I have had before. My score 15/20.
14 Aug 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Quite a good crowd in this evening after the excitement of the Olympics and GBBF.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Lord of the Rings4.20GoodMalty golden ale with a biscuity malt flavour with a little hop for balance. My score 15/20.
Aylesbury (ABC) - Swifter3.80GoodGolden ale with a fairly bitter character balanced by a little maltiness. Dryish finish with a little hop. My score 15/20.
Aylesbury (ABC) - Stronger4.90AcceptableStrong bitter dominated by crystal malt giving a rather cloying bittersweet flavour. Little hoppiness to add balance. My score 13/20.
Otley - Experimental Stout5.50AcceptableThe experiment was that Sorachi hops were used in this beer - lots of them, wiping out any malty flavour that did exist. More like a dark bitter. My score 14/20.
07 Aug 2012 (Stephen Harris)
As Pip has mentioned, the new handpumps are looking good. Let’s hope the next phase of restoration is the gent’s toilets, or perhaps the bar-room floor. Speaking of the toilets, I managed to choose a pair of real stinkers off the bar.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Warwickshire - Golden Bear4.90PoorAmber coloured. Sweet malt predominates. A bit of caramel. Syrupy and sticky.
Baseline - Thunderbolt4.00PoorThere seemed too much going on with a mix of malts and a clashing Aurora hop character. Cloudy (sorry, ‘naturally hazy’) and a bit grainy.

2310 hours visit. The 2 sets of 5 handpump Angram units have been installed and look very impressive. Pleasingly they have short swans' necks and not those monstrous long swans' necks which reach the bottom of the glass and guarantee a short measure as the glass is extracted!!
BeerABVScoreNotes

The pub is found in Hoxton, Central London, N1 7TA.

Re-opened Monday 3rd June 2013 after a period of closure for major refurbishment. The corner double door entrance is now open with floor tiles entrance "mat" renovated - these doors carry published opening times, previously always very "flexible". Is now a Ground Floor and Basement operation only as the upper floors are being converted to residential use. 2 very fine large Wenlock Brewery mirrors adorn the walls. 10 handpumps on the front of original horseshoe bar counter in two side-by-side banks of 5. The 2 lighted statues from top of bar overhead have migrated to either end of the mantelpiece over the open fire. A row of 10 keg taps have been introduced. Gents toilet with 2 urinals at Ground Floor level in left hand corner. New stairs customer access to basement for 2 Ladies toilets and a Gents sit-down. The backless piano has been retained but moved from the right hand corner to the left hand corner. Mini boxes of cider for sale at the back of the right hand leg of the bar counter. The pub is now operated by Moontide which offers a 10% discount on real ales for card carrying CAMRA members. HISTORICAL INFORMATION : For a long time THE real ale house in North London. For years run by guvnors Wills and Steve. A battle royale was on in 2012 to save the pub from the developers into whose hands it had fallen. The local council provided some protection but the battle continued. As at November 2012 yet another revised planning application was made to convert the floors above the pub into accommodation leaving the pub to run as a ground floor and basement operation only. Watch this space! Closed for major refurbishment of the ground floor after business on Sunday 3rd March 2013 with opening planned for, perhaps, late April or May 2013. Planning application to convert upper floors to flats was approved by the local Council sometime in early 2013 meaning loss of the first floor facilities - principally the function room. 2017 North London CAMRA branch Pub of the Year.

We have visited this pub 219 times, seen 757 different beers and tried 655 of them.
