Visits Details
15 Jan 2013 (Martin the Mildman)
Seeme to be getting back on track now with a good crowd in on a Tuesday evening, usual mix of locals and Tuesday club members.
Crouch Vale - Blackwater Mild | 3.70 | | Quite a bitter taste to this from roast and chocolate malt. Some fruity hop in the finish. My score 15/20. |
Franklins - English Garden Golden Ale | 3.80 | | Good citrus hop character to this pale golden ale. Dryish, citrus finish. My score 15/20. |
19 Dec 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening until close.
Windsor & Eton - Conqueror 1075 | 7.40 | | Ran out before I ordered but scrounged last knockings from the pump pull for a third of a half |
Aylesbury (ABC) - Hop Harvest | 3.80 | | A green hopped beer. The intensity of hop oils only came through when the pint was well down in the glass |
Hanlons (formerly O'Hanlon's) - Goodwill Bitter | 5.00 | | A stronger version than previously. Intriguingly spiced with flavours I could not name |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Adnams - Old Ale | 4.10 | Not Tried
Mighty Oak - Oscar Wilde Mild | 3.70 | Not Tried
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Truman's Runner | 4.00 | Not Tried
Bays - Topsail | 4.00 | Not Tried
27 Nov 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
A few of the former Tuesday crowd in here, but something seemed to be lacking here.
Summer Wine (SWB) - Resistance Dark Mild | 3.70 | | Strong roasty toasty malt character giving a bitter coffee flavour to the beer. Low hop character and a rather dry, roasty finish. My score 16/20. |
08 Nov 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening visit. Nothing much has changed since last visit.
Acorn - Tangerine Dream | 4.30
Fyne - Cloud Burst | 4.30 | | Good head retention and excellent condition |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Red Fox - Red Fox Mild | 3.60 | Not Tried
Red Fox - Black Fox Porter | 4.80 | Not Tried
12 Sep 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
2245 hours visit. Good to chat to some old mucker regulars.
Hawkshead - Lakeland Gold | 4.40 | | Several pints thereof |
Triple fff - Pressed Rat & Warthog | 3.80 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Hawkshead - Red | 4.60 | Not Tried
Caveman (latterly a cuckoo at Leatherbritches) - Citra (brewed at Kent Brewery) | 4.10 | Not Tried | Again no one knew the provenance of this brew so avoided it on principle. Subsequently identified as being brewed at Kent Brewery |
28 Aug 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Very quiet on a Tuesday late afternoon without the usual buzz associated with this pub.
Titanic - Mild | 3.50 | | Malty mild with a slightly dry character. Not as good a sample as I have had before. My score 15/20. |
14 Aug 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Quite a good crowd in this evening after the excitement of the Olympics and GBBF.
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Lord of the Rings | 4.20 | | Malty golden ale with a biscuity malt flavour with a little hop for balance. My score 15/20. |
Aylesbury (ABC) - Swifter | 3.80 | | Golden ale with a fairly bitter character balanced by a little maltiness. Dryish finish with a little hop. My score 15/20. |
Aylesbury (ABC) - Stronger | 4.90 | | Strong bitter dominated by crystal malt giving a rather cloying bittersweet flavour. Little hoppiness to add balance. My score 13/20. |
Otley - Experimental Stout | 5.50 | | The experiment was that Sorachi hops were used in this beer - lots of them, wiping out any malty flavour that did exist. More like a dark bitter. My score 14/20. |
07 Aug 2012 (Stephen Harris)
As Pip has mentioned, the new handpumps are looking good. Let’s hope the next phase of restoration is the gent’s toilets, or perhaps the bar-room floor. Speaking of the toilets, I managed to choose a pair of real stinkers off the bar.
Warwickshire - Golden Bear | 4.90 | | Amber coloured. Sweet malt predominates. A bit of caramel. Syrupy and sticky. |
Baseline - Thunderbolt | 4.00 | | There seemed too much going on with a mix of malts and a clashing Aurora hop character. Cloudy (sorry, ‘naturally hazy’) and a bit grainy. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Hanlons (formerly O'Hanlon's) - Firefly | 3.70 | Not Tried
Titanic - Mild | 3.50 | Not Tried
Wooden Hand - Gribben Ale | 4.10 | Not Tried
Crouch Vale - Yakima Gold | 4.20 | Not Tried
Titanic - Pier 54 | 5.40 | Not Tried
01 Aug 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
2310 hours visit. The 2 sets of 5 handpump Angram units have been installed and look very impressive. Pleasingly they have short swans' necks and not those monstrous long swans' necks which reach the bottom of the glass and guarantee a short measure as the glass is extracted!!
Hackney - Golden Ale | 4.00 | | My first ever 'ackney ale. Lovely dry and refreshing golden ale which grew on me to a second pint |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Northumberland - Fog on the Tyne | 4.10 | Not Tried
Vale - Black Swan Mild | 3.90 | Not Tried
Cottage - Planet Ale | 4.30 | Not Tried
Kent - Going for Gold | 4.40 | Not Tried
Pin-Up - Milk Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried | At this stage who, what, where, how |
Baseline - Thunderbolt | 4.00 | Not Tried
17 Jul 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Fat Cat - Meow Mild | 4.30 | | Dark brown strong mild with a strong roast malt character giving a rather bitter flavour to the beer. The finish is dry and roasty. My score 14/20. |
Ossett - Calypso | 3.60 | | Pale and hoppy with a dry, bitter flavour. The finish is dry and hoppy. My score 14/20. |
