The Thursday and Friday sessions had taken its toll on the beer available, but there was still plenty to keep me interested. The pub is not far from the river and easy to get to from both over and under ground stations. A stillage is set up in the rear courtyard for most of the beers with the stronger ones going through the handpumps on the bar. Festival glasses from Battersea and a barbeque make up the rest of the festival. There was a queue to get in as I arrived on the dot of 12, and most of the seats were taken. I shared a table and waited for some Ratebeer.com friends to arrive. Also met up with Dubbel and we chatted about beer.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Eastwood's - Black Prince5.00ExcellentBlack, lasting beige head. Attractive choccy beer. Lovely smoke, bonfire smokiness, rich and full in mouth. Excellent rich, dark fruit beer. Dark jammy plums and blackberry. Good dry roast finish. Superb. Beer of the festival for me.
Abbeydale - Deception4.10ExcellentPale gold, lasting bubbly white head. Supposed to be sauvignon blanc-y and it is. Nelson Sauvin hops? Getting towards the end of the barrel, so little condition, but the mango/passionfruit is unmistakeable. In top condition, this would be fantastic, rich tropical fruits and drying tangy hop. Just lacks condition.
Salamander - Cassowary5.00ExcellentGold, lasting head. It's a lovely beer, good condition, gorgeous hops, white wine-ish in the flavours, very drying finish. Good beer.
Great Heck - Yorkshire Pale Ale4.30GoodGold, slight haze, lasting attractive off white head. Great condition. Lovely biscuity malt, attractive grass, elderflower hop aroma. Could do with a bit more conditioning as flavours are a bit tight on the tongue. Good pale ale mind. Give it a day, it’d be very good.
Old Spot - Never Again7.60GoodHandpump. Lots of people thought that this was good. I was less certain. Hazy russet/chestnut colour, no head. Slightly syrupy as you’d expect. It’s go good fruit. Caramel malt. Solid beer.
Old Mill - Springs Eternal4.00AcceptableIt’s a slightly green apple golden bitter. Some dusty hop on finish. Some rose petal. Not quite ready I would guess. Some fruit salad.
Bob's (brand produced at Partners) - Chardonnayle5.10AcceptableClear paleish gold, thin white head. Bit of butter on the aroma. Supposed to be made with US hops. Well they may have waved some hops near the kettle at some point. It’s a sub Summer Lightning Me2 beer.
Tigertops - Dark Prospects4.10AcceptableDecent dark ale. Bit of liquorice. OK, like ruby stone fruit flavours, at least that's what the notes say.
Bridestones - Coiners4.20AcceptableAmber, thin lasting ivory head. Supposed to be full of cascades. Yes it has some. Quite earthy, some toffee malt. OK, not very hoppy though, perhaps they got lost on the way down from Yorkshire?
Hambleton - Sweet Chariot4.00AcceptableStarted well. It’s a decent bitter, nice sweetness. Gold colour, no real head. Good herb, nice earthy malts, bit woody, solid.
Dark Horse - Whip Cracker5.00AcceptableAttractive mahogany colour with thin beige head. Butter, but just a touch. Rest of it is a pretty good ESB. It's a bit dry, in fact definite dryness on the finish.
Captain Cook - Slipway4.20PoorButtery/caramelly diacetyl on aroma. OK in mouth, decent hop on finish. Butter goes through it. Rest of beer is a decent bitter. Proper bitterness on finish. Get rid of the diacetyl and this would be pretty good.
Whalebone - Neck Oil Bitter3.90PoorCopper colour, with a slight haze and lasting beige head. Bit acidic as a bitter. Not terribly good. No real condition. Pretty poor
Wentworth - Peacock4.60PoorChestnut, lasting beige head. Not bad. Bit of butter/caramel. Yes, a bit of a boring bitter to be honest.
Bridestones - Brambo4.10PoorBit of diacetyl. The Bramling Cross hops do come through, but the mouthfeel is too carbonated and there is just too much butter for me.
28 Feb 2009 (Dubbel)
Arrived mid-afternoon Saturday for the Yorkshire Beer Festival, which boasted over 50 ales with every Yorkshire brewery represented. However, the festival had started on Thursday evening and the pickings were decidedly slim on our arrival and continued to thin out as the hours passed. Good numbers meant there was limited standing room in the courtyard. Some familiar faces present.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Eastwood's - Black Prince5.00ExcellentDark wondrous stout like ale, grassy, malted and balanced.
Acorn - Gorlovka6.00ExcellentBig hitting stout beer. My beer of the festival (well, of what was left anyway!)
Great Heck - Yorkshire Pale Ale4.30GoodDry pale ale with some nice fruitiness. Decent.
Yorkshire Dales - Addleborough5.00GoodSulpurous nose, massively hopped IPA with big flavours.
Whalebone - Neck Oil Bitter3.90GoodCopper bitter, rounded fruit, very morish.
Tigertops - Dark Prospects4.10AcceptableBlack, malty, fairly average.
Hambleton - Rhatas4.60AcceptableDark ruby with a vinous nose and palate.
Salamander - Cassowary5.00AcceptableAlmost everyone else was raving about this but for me it was a fairly ordinary golden premium ale. I must have a Sally palate block.
