About the time of day when town centre pubs should be full of office workers downing a few pints before going home on a Friday, but sadly they were missing. The manageress told me that the refurbishment has been postponed so the pub will not close from Sunday 11 October after all.

The For Sale signs that have adorned this pub have now gone. The Penguin Pub Company who have been managing this pub have now signed a lease on the premises and the lady who thought that she would be moving on today is staying. The pub will close for about two weeks for refurshment after close of business on Saturday 10 October.

I just missed the 20:30 bus so I decided to wait in here for the 20:45. The pub was quiet so I was able to have a good chat with the landlord about the Penguin Pub Company and their beers which he told me are brewed at Maidstone.

This pub has just re-opened after a short period of closure, it is still advertised as To Let, and the current incumbent is only there for this week, with new people taking over on Monday 21st. I am told that most keg fonts and handpumps will be replaced very soon. Only one other customer at the time of my visit, and we chatted about long closed pubs in the Ashford area.

Early evening, the barmaid kept apologising to customers for the fact that the ales have gone up to £2 per pint. Nobody seemed to be too bothered about this.

BeerABVScoreNotes
Nelson - Core Commander4.40AcceptableA well kept pint, but not my idea of a beer, a strong taste of cooking apples, and not much hop character.
