Early afternoon and comfortably busy. I had not been here before, but I am sure I will return the next time I do a tour of pubs on the North London Line.

After a pause to watch football in Leyton, my pub crawl picks up here in the early evening. The pub is crowded, and the CAMRA discount seems not to be available today.

Crate - IPA5.80GoodA very fruity, US-type pale ale.

My pub crawl has grown to nearly 30-strong and we arrive here en masse from Hackney Wick station to find the brew-pub already jammed full of people. Many end up standing outside, despite the chilly weather. CAMRA discount available.

Warm enough to sit outside by the canal. Very tranquil watching the boats, ducks and swans go past.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - IPA5.80ExcellentAmber strong bitter with a very good fruity hop character with citrus and tropical fruit flavours. Good malt balance. The finish is fruity and hoppy. My score 16/20.
Crate - Golden Ale3.80GoodA well balanced golden ale with some citrus hop and a good malt base. My score 15/20.

Our quest to try beer from all five Hackney breweries is completed here. Most of the group has not been here before and most seem to fall in love with the place. Weird to be literally in the glow of the Olympic floodlights. The pub is busy until late.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - IPA5.80GoodA very fruity, amber-coloured, American-style pale ale.
Crate - Lager4.80PoorI tried a half of the house-brewed, keg lager. I shall not bother again. Cold, fizzy and sweet – lowest common denominator stuff.

After a mammoth eight hour stint in the Olympic Park, a friend and I are ready for some non-“Olympic Approved” catering and we head here for a beer and a pizza. Disappointingly, it is not as accessible from the Olympic park as it should be. We just miss the Crate IPA – they were busy brewing some more.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - Golden Ale3.80GoodDecent golden bitter.

Quiet in the early evening of just the second day of opening, and clearly still a bit ‘work-in-progress’ as they rush to be fully up and running in time for the adjacent Olympics. This brewery is even nearer to the main stadium than is Tap East.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - Golden Ale3.80GoodGolden, soft and a bit creamy, some bitter hop.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Truman's Swift & Swallow3.90Not Tried

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E9 5EN.

Hackney Wick has seen a transformation from grim area of industrial units to thriving ‘creative’ quarter. Only problem is, all the traditional pubs had closed down. The Crate Brewery was established in July 2012 in a former industrial premises and is a combination of brewpub and pizza restaurant, although with a predominately ‘pub’ feel. There is a large, high-ceilinged room and outside seating (some in boats) beside the canal. Initially the five-barrel brewery kit was visible in a room alongside, but in July 2013 the brewery moved to larger premises nearby. Inside, the furniture is made of recycled packing cases and pallets. It stands literally at the gate of the Olympic Park.

We have visited this pub 58 times, seen 103 different beers and tried 61 of them.
