Caught by a sudden thunderstorm whilst walking across Victoria Park, it seemed only sensible to come in here for shelter.

This pub really does have the loveliest garden, enhanced now by a small ‘Crazy Golf’ course. It was a fine evening sitting out here listening to some laid back live music.
BeerABVScoreNotes
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Single Hop Series: Equinox4.50ExcellentAmber in colour and slightly hazy. Excellent hops.
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Hoppy Brown4.80ExcellentHoppy brown ales really are the bestest beers.
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Red Empire5.20AcceptableA bit redder and a bit sweeter than I recall from last time I drank this beer.

Lovely weather and Victoria Park is full of people in the late-afternoon. This pub is heaving and they have run out of any kind of food and a lot of the drinks – apparently it has been packed since opening time.
BeerABVScoreNotes
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Empire Stout5.00ExcellentBlack and full-bodied and a bit dry.
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Porter4.60GoodA very decent, dark Porter.

A pleasant walk here from Crate along the canal and across the park, ignoring the drizzle. Plenty of Sunday lunchers in at 3pm. I noticed for the first time that one of the cask beers is always available for £3 a pint.
BeerABVScoreNotes
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Klockwork Orange4.50GoodPale gold, a little spicy, cloudy, wheaty. Not obviously orangey.
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Spruce Almighty Pale5.10GoodA brown beer. Resinous in a piney, bathroom sort of way.

Very quiet when I arrived in the early evening, but lots coming in towards quiz time. The garden is looking lovely and I was not surprised to hear that it has won another ‘Best Pub Garden in London’ award.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Laine - Hackney (see also People's Pints) - RPA4.50ExcellentRPA stands for Random Pale Ale, and apparently the randomness of this beer is that it has a different hop every time. Don’t know what hop was being used here, but it was very nice.
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Old Timer Pale Ale5.00ExcellentA robust Pale Ale, with English rather than US hop tastes (I think, but I’m easily befuddled by such things).

Mid-afternoon on a sunny Sunday and the pub is crowded. Almost everybody is in the extensive gardens. There was a time, years ago, when the garden fraternity here was around 90% local gangsters and villains, 10% casual passing cyclists and pram-pushers. The ratio is now reversed, plus a sprinkling of hipsters.
BeerABVScoreNotes
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Red Empire5.20ExcellentUS-style Red Ale. Not too heavy, lots of hop flavours.
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - Summer Sessions3.50GoodLightweight, easy-drinking, pale bitter.
People's Pints (Laine - Hackney) - IPA5.00GoodBitter citrus-fruit, tasty, golden IPA.

Large establishment with a big garden area facing on to the park. Several in watching the start of the football but an equal number enjoying the outdoor drinking opportunities. I've only list the beers I had.

I was the only customer for a while in the early evening until my friend arrived. Disappointingly, there is still no beer ready from the in-house brewery. “By the end of the month” we were told. In the meantime the pub is being supplied by the Laines sister brewery in Brighton.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Laine - Ruby Sipper5.00AcceptableDark and spicy and lifeless.
Laine - London Porter4.70AcceptableDeep ruby red, smooth and fruity. Might be quite good, but in lacklustre condition here.

Re-opening night for this pub which is now the third in the Laine’s chain of pub-breweries. The brew kit looks good, but none of the home-brew is quite ready tonight and there are three beers from Laine’s in Brighton and three or four guests.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hackney - Winter Warmer5.00GoodFull-bodied, winter beer.
Laine - Ruby Sipper5.00GoodPleasant, Christmas-spiced beer. Not over-done.
Laine - Laine's Best4.00AcceptableA rather ordinary bitter.

This very large pub was nearly empty when I visited early evening on a Thursday. The paucity of real ale was explained by ‘lines being cleaned’, leading to this being a rather short visit.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Truman’s Lazarus4.10AcceptableThe fervent hope of local drinkers is that the opening later this summer of Truman’s Hackney brewery will lead to an upsurge in beer quality. The label for this beer promised “Golden and Hoppy”. It was golden in colour but thin and insipid.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E9 7BT.

This pub was built in 1865 as the Queen’s Hotel, one of several prestigious hotels built around the edge of the newly developed Victoria Park in Victoria Park Road; the ‘People’s Park’. By 1900, and quite probably earlier, it was a Truman’s Brewery house. In 1986 the pub was renamed the Falcon & Firkin and was equipped with an in-house brewery. The brewery developed into one of the biggest in the Firkin chain, eventually supplying several other pubs in the London area. In March 1990, this pub’s garden hosted a legendary Firkin Brewery beer festival, with beers gathered from around the breweries in the chain. Following the demise of the Firkin empire, this pub was renamed the Victoria Park in 2002 and again renamed in 2008, this time as the Britannia. The pub has a large, open-plan interior. But its best-known feature is its large beer garden, which has remained popular throughout the various changes of name and style. Time Out magazine still likes to use the dated description ‘Gastro-pub’ about this pub. But in reality it is a decent pub for all sorts that also happens to sell good food. Rated by the Guardian newspaper in 2012 as one of ‘London’s Top 5 Pub Gardens’. In December 2013, the pub name changed yet again to People's Park Tavern. A £250,000 refurbishment was undergone and the pub re-opened once again as a brew-pub. Taken over by Young's in Autumn 2018, still leased to Laine Pub Company.

We have visited this pub 10 times, seen 25 different beers and tried 18 of them.
