Tasting Summary

These comments are the opinion of the individual reviewer and represent what they thought of the beer on a particular day in a particular pub. If a review is less favourable, it may be because the beer suffered somewhere in the supply chain between them and the brewery.

Hogan SamplingGood08 May 2026 3rd beer of the festival visit: Good head and lasting lacing on this amber-coloured bitter from Consett Ale Works, established in 2005 and located in the historic old stable block at the rear of The Grey Horse pub at 115 Sherburn Terrace, Consett, County Durham. A sweetened bitter first hit on this flagship session bitter, whose name pays homage to Consett's historic iron and steel-working heritage. A very dry hoppiness rising from the brewery strictly using UK hops, like Fuggles, East Kent Goldings, or Challenger, which are famous for being earthy, herbal, and spicy rather than the loud, tropical, or citrusy styles found in American craft beers. Earthy, herbal hints, reminiscent of black tea, hitting my taste buddies with a touch of mild, woody spice. A malty hint veering up with caramel and malt flavours entertaining my taste buds with hints of sweet toffee and biscuit. A dry bitterness presenting with subtle fruit flavours of dried orchard fruits such as sultanas, raisins, red apples, alongside a subtle hint of blackcurrant or plum, before sailing out. Presented in good form and a pleasant mouthfeel.
