3rd visit of the outing: This Harvey’s House also in All Saints’ Street is very ancient and retaining its old bar counter and bar-back and panelling. A gem of an old place and where my small party of the two Londoners were able to meet up with fellow Londoners on the coach party. Seating to be had in this long narrow pub with the bar stretching most of the left-hand side as you come in. Prompt, friendly service for our mid-afternoon visit and two Harvey’s on alongside a London Pride. I tried the Harvey’s pale as I had not had it before or for a very long time.

| Harvey's - Pells Pale | 3.70 | | Presented with very good head and lacing and lasting on this light straw-coloured pale ale launched in July 2024 by Harvey's Brewery in Lewes, East Sussex, first set up in 1790 and with their brewing commencing in around 1820 following operating as a wholesale and retail wine and spirit merchant, alongside being a coal merchant. A very fruited first hit on this pale named after the old Sussex dialect word pell, meaning a body of water such as the natural spring water source that feeds the historic Pells Pool Lido in Lewes. A fruity hoppiness rapidly rising with zesty citrus, lime and tropical fruit flavours like mango on my palate from its blend of New World Motueka hops from New Zealand and traditional UK hops. Its heritage Plumage Archer malt, a legendary British grain that originated in Wiltshire, aiding this pale’s touch of fruity sweetness. A fruity bitterness prevailing for me and lingering aided by its floral, nettle and grassy hints alongside Harvey’s stone-fruit as in apricot yeast aroma. Served in very good nick. |

Historic pub interiors #4. Good description by Hogan, there is also an upstairs lounge with more recent wood panelling, leather sofas and a colonial feel to it . Early evening, just 2 other customers in. Interesting pub, less interesting ales.

Almost opposite The Stag Inn, just visited, and going towards the seafront in All Saints Street. It is said to date from 1642 but part of it was rebuilt after a fire in 1925. It too was quiet for my late afternoon visit. A warm welcome and prompt service for the two real ales to choose from. On the outside it is real Tudor in its appearance with wooden beams there not for decoration but as part of the very fabric of the building. On the inside its timbered panelled walls are adorned with local scenes. It is rated one star by CAMRA for its interior of special national historic interest. A rear courtyard garden there is but a rickety and steep wooden ladder-like staircase to get into it and so would not suit the less agile.

This Lewes-based bitter came with good head and lacing and in fact even a cat would have enjoyed its creamy head. A moreishly dry bitter first bite. A fruity bitterness rising and good. A fruit-infused maltiness joining in was moderate and lingering. |

Slightly early doors for the adverised 5pm opening as we forgot that the nearby Stag does not open on Mondays. A good locals pub.

Pub no. 3. Now I like this pub. Proper old school. Dark wood panels, red carpet with embedded fleur de lis and Frank Sinatra on the stereo. A line of fellows at the bar and Harvey's Best Bitter.

The pub is found in Hastings, East Sussex, TN34 3BE.
A pub in the Old Town with ancient origins, this house was established as the Chequers in around 1642 and was renamed the Cinque Ports Arms Inn in 1827. The pub was pretty much destroyed by a fire in 1929 and was rebuilt in the mock-Tudor style we see today. Much wood-panelling inside, there are rooms on two floors – the upstairs bar is called the Chequers Bar in deference to the pub’s earlier name.
