| Kernel (The Kernel) - A London Porter | 5.10 | | Lovely dark un. |
10 Apr 2026 (Jack William)
First and last visit on a tour of Broadstairs with my daughter. Superb micro and thanks for the recommendation Dosser. We arrived just after noon but already a few other in. Very well kept beers and the best pub toilet art I’ve seen in a long while. Andy very informative and still working hard when we returned around 4:30 by which time the pub was bussing. Excellent.
| Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Mountain Mama | 5.30 | | Thick, fruity unfiltered pale ale. Superb. Specially brewed by female brewers for International Women’s Day. |
| Anspach & Hobday - Bermondsey Pale | 3.40 | | |
| Dark Revolution - Velveteen | 4.80 | Not Tried | |
| Woodshedding - The Jump | 4.10 | Not Tried | |

7th visit of this outing to Broadstairs: As always packed and for our early evening visit is this awarding winning and very petite micropub and closest to Broadstairs Station. However, we timed it just right for a bench seat at the back and bumped into a few familiar faces from the now closed Four Candles just up the road and at this very table we were able to share. Usual prompt friendly service and a choice of 5 real ales on.
| Lakedown - Marquee - American Stout | 4.80 | | Head and lacing on being served but did not last on this rum barrel-aged American stout from Burwash, East Sussex, and on the family farm of actor and rock legend, Roger Daltrey, the co-founder and lead singer of the rock band, The Who. He co-founded Lakedown Brewing Company with his son, Jamie, and sons-in-law. A dark chocolatey and roasted coffee-infusion on its first bite. A dry smoky bitterness rising and accompanied by a subtle piney sweetness from its combination of Centennial and Golding hops. A sweet malty bitter note winning over from its blend of five grains including Extra Pale, Black and Chocolate. A dry hoppy bitterness playing out. Not holding its head and lacing and so perhaps towards the end but tasted fine. |
| Elusive - Oregon Trail | 5.80 | Not Tried | |
| Cloudwater - Chubbles 53°N | 6.50 | Not Tried | |
| Jiddler's Tipple (cuckoo at By The Horns) - Swifty - Session IPA | 3.40 | Not Tried | |
| Anspach & Hobday - Big Top Bitter | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
03 Apr 2026 (Dosser)
After 2 hours of freezing at gadds brewery we traded our tokens for cash, couldn't get any buses, good Friday and ended up in the S E. Poty. 5 real ales on, mostly at very reasonable prices.
| Lakedown - Goldhawk London Stout | 4.80 | | Lovely vegan stout. Apparently. But tasted normal to us. |
| Cloudwater - Forever Chubbles | 8.00 | | £9 a pint and no samples allowed. £12 waiter told us elsewhere. Typical vegan style beer. Murky, expensive but enjoyable. Does the job if you want to fall asleep and have an empty bank balance. But, shows why the Royston is different to other bars. |
25 Feb 2026 (Dosser)
4 beers on, and 2 changed while we were there. Lynne said when the beers were pulled upwards and dropped into position in the chiller it reminded her of the film we watched yesterday. Nuremberg.
| Pentrich - Slither | 6.80 | | As murky as it gets but tasted great. Looked terrible. Vegan style, so it wouldn't look good. |
| Settle - Old Smithy Porter | 4.70 | | No head, lacing.etc. first out of cask after previous beer went. OK porter but disappointing. |
18 Dec 2025 (Dosser)
Met up with a few camra bods for a crawl.4 beers on.
| Three Acre - Winter ale | 5.60 | | Unusual style at £4.60 a pint. |
| Moot Brew - Bincho | 7.00 | | A walnut brown stout. Interesting. £6 a pint. |

7th visit of the outing: This little micro close to the station was packed to capacity for our early evening arrival but by no means entirely full of beer tourists. Only the four cyclists we earlier met in the Four Candles left to catch the train before our modest party of two followed them. Despite the busy situation here and standing room only, we were served seamlessly and without hesitation such is the staff's ability against the busy odds.
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Little Cracker | 5.00 | | Clearly a firkin of this just-launched seasonal ruby ale from the local Ramsgate brewery had also managed to make its way here and just as I did but in my case on foot. Very good head presented and lacing lasting throughout. A dry hoppy first hit. A spicy hoppiness rising care of its mixture of the spicier Kent hops with the odd fruited note from the berries climbing up. A good degree of fruity bitterness playing out. |
| Burning Sky - Plateau (was 3.5%) | 3.40 | Not Tried | |
| Elusive - Pastel De Nata (Collab with New Bristol) | 7.00 | Not Tried | |
| Elusive - Barney's X Elusive Side Quest - West Coast IPA | 6.00 | Not Tried | |
25 Oct 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
8th visit of the outing: Busy as always for our early evening arrival but our party timed it just right for a table seating four. In true micropub tradition, it does not take many to fill it. Usual warm welcome and a speedy delivery of our chosen real ales.
| Newbarns - Henok's Mild (as spelt on its pumpclip) | 5.30 | | Head and lacing, minimal, and lasting, not able to. This Scottish mild from Edinburgh presented in its defence a fruited and bitter first hit. A malty bitterness rising with a hint of dark fruits and a touch of liquorice. A mildly sweet bitterness ambling downwards. Originally brewed at the start of 2024, it is a collaboration with Omnipollo, the brewery's closest pals from Stockholm and where it was first brewed. Certainly my first tasting of a Newbarns' brew as I recall. |
| Elusive - Shadow of the Beast | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
| Tartarus - Rainbow Serpent - Rocky Road Milk Stout | 5.80 | Not Tried | |
| Elusive - Pale Ale - Hazy NZ | 4.40 | Not Tried | |

Sixth stop of the outing: Busy as is usual for my early evening visit. Seating to be had for our party of two and the customary warm welcome and friendly and speedy service. Good banter with a local fellow real ale drinker and a former brewery drayman and where the dray, a low, flat-bed wagon without sides, pulled generally by horses or mules, was used to transport all kinds of goods and not just barrels of beer. A healthy selection of cask ales on in this ever busy little micro.
| JW Lees (see also Lees) - Boddingtons Cask | 4.00 | | A good creamy head and lacing and lasting on this JW Lees' bitter from Manchester and the city's oldest brewer*. A lightly fruited bitter first bite. A dry bitterness rising. A fruited hoppy note or two bobbing up with hints of caramel, toffee and grapefruit. A moreish bitterness drifting downwards. *From on-line research, JW Lees is now the exclusive brewer of Boddingtons Cask Ale which they brew under licence from AB Inbev. Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV, known as AB InBev, is a Belgian multinational drink and brewing company based in Leuven, Belgium, and is said to be the largest brewer in the world. |
| Wantsum - Green Hop Ernest | 4.20 | Not Tried | |
| Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Blarney Stone | 4.30 | Not Tried | |
| Vibrant Forest - Canopy Series Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried | |
20 Sep 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
5th visit of the outing: Usual busy gathering inside this micropub almost equidistance to Broadstairs Station as Mind the Gap and for my early evening visit before catching the train back to London. Not a green hop beer in sight as not yet on site unlike at the last two stops as the green hop ales have of course only just been tapped at Gadds' and at the Four Candles this very day. However, a good 5 real ales to choose from presented. As always, friendly prompt service with a smile from the barmaid.
| Sureshot - Whole Lotta Funk 45's - stout | 4.50 | | Not sure I have ever tried a shot of Sureshot before, an independent brewery best known for "hop forward styles" according to their website. Their brewery and taproom are located in the arches below Piccadilly Station in Greater Manchester and they have been brewing for 3 years a range of styles. This stout with a robust hint of coffee came with very good head and lacing and lasting throughout. A dry malty first bite. A malty bitterness, ably assisted by a mixed malt billing of 11 different varieties including Cherry Ember Smoked Malt and Red Rye Malt, rising with a good number of coffee beans getting in on the act and tantalising my taste buds. Notes of treacle, cherry and light roasted coffee veering up. A moreish dryness lingering aided by being dry hopped with Bramling Cross hops. Very moreish but a train to catch and so my sampling had hit the buffers for now! |
