Visits Details

14 Feb 2026 (Hogan Sampling)
4th visit of Farnham and its environs: An orderly queue worked well for being served promptly and fairly at the petite bar counter on our later afternoon visit and coinciding with the final minutes of the England v Scotland rugby game on just the one screen upstairs and permitted in this ancient but superbly restored old building with rafters on display in the barn-like structure of the first floor. Six ales to choose from certainly did not disappoint with thirds also on offer affording me a paddle of three third pints in one order from the bar on the ground floor. A petite wooden stool on offer, and almost matching the wooden rafters on view, certainly also did not disappoint my enjoyment and packed it was for the rugby made all the more enjoyable by the range of real ales on offer. Only the one Scottish tartan hat and here what looked like a Tam o' Shanter (a soft, floppy wool bonnet with a pom-pom or "toorie") in view among the assembled but no kilts to be seen!

Bristol Beer Factory - Fortitude4.00Excellent1st beer of this visit: Very good head and lacing and lasting well on this amber bitter from an independent brewery founded in 2004 and now at a new, state-of-the-art brewing site in Ashton Vale in South Bristol. A dry bitter first bite. A moreishly hoppiness rapidly rising from its mix of southern English hops, including Fuggles, Challenger and Jester. A good bitter hoppy note tap dancing on my taste buds with hints of marmalade, ginger and dark fruit to tantalise from its emerging sweetened maltiness. Its Maris Otter malt lending it a bready and biscuity touch. Not in the least fruited for me or my taste buds which suited us superbly on this bog-standard traditional British bitter. A dry, lingering spicy finish on its descent.
Mallinsons - Kohatu4.00Good2nd beer of this visit: Good head and lacing and sticking to the ending on this West Yorkshire pale ale from a micro-brewery based in Lockwood, Huddersfield, founded in 2008. A lightly fruited first hit on this pale named after a prominent New Zealand hop variety, and serving a dual-purpose in its aroma and bittering abilities and released in 2011 by the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research. A hoppy bitterness winning over with hints of lime, pineapple and pine. A dry hop infusion pervading. An every so mildly fruity note joining in on the sailing out. Perfectly palatable but pales not often my favoured ales.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Salted Caramel Lucaria4.50Good3rd beer of this visit: Good head and lacing and lasting on this jet black Derbyshire porter from Thornbridge Hall in Bakewell, and from a brewing company founded in 2005 and widely regarded as a pioneer of the UK craft beer scene. A malty first hit from its Maris Otter, chocolate and wheat malts. A chocolatey note rising in its gentle bitterness derived from its Goldings hops. Hints of runny salted caramel winning over with touches of vanilla ice cream coming to the fore and achieved through the use of specific ingredients like oats and lactose. A lingering chocolatey sweetness playing out. A touch too sweet for my taste buds but presented here in fine condition.
