Pub smelling of fresh paint and near devoid of customers early evening on a Monday. As I arrived somebody was complaining that the Harvey’s tasted of vinegar. The manager gave it the full “I don’t drink real ale myself so who knows, perhaps it’s near the end of the barrel, I’m planning to clean the pipes when that one’s gone”. The pint was replaced but the beer remained on sale.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | In poor condition but drinkable. Had none of the usual full-flavour. |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Purity - Mad Goose | 4.20 | Not Tried

There is a ‘launch party’ here tonight for Clarence & Fredericks Brewery of Croydon, and a couple of well-known beer bloggers are in attendance. To our surprise it turns out to be a ‘by invitation only’ event, although we manage to blag our way in anyway. Nice beer and nice people.
By The Horns - Lambeth Walk | 5.10 | | Dry, roasty, black, rich, bitter porter. |
Clarence & Fredericks - Golden Ale | 3.80 | | Golden in colour. Great hoppy aroma, backed by a good hoppy taste (from Magnum, cascade and Summit hops) and a sweetish finish. |
Windsor & Eton - Canberra | 4.00 | | Chestnut-coloured and malty, with some hops too. |
Clarence & Fredericks - Best Bitter | 4.10 | | A nicely balanced, traditional bitter. |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Redemption - Trinity | 3.00 | Not Tried

Busy but managed to squeeze in the back room.
By The Horns - Lambeth Walk | 5.10 | | Excellent black porter with smooth chocolate and roast coffee malt notes. Full bodied with a malty finish. My score 17/20. |

Busy early evening with a small beer festival on stillage in the back room.
East London (ELB) - Quadrant Oatmeal Stout (now please use 5.5% entry | 5.80 | | Black oatmeal stout with full bodied roast malt flavour with a little hop as well. Finish is roasty with a hint of sweetness. My score 17/20. |
East London (ELB) - Jamboree | 4.80 | | Strong amber bitter with good citrus hop flavour balanced with a little malt. Citrus hop finish. My score 15/20. |

Fairly quiet in here but there was an England Euro 2012 game on and no TV here.
Hackney - Best Bitter | 4.40 | | Fairly "safe" amber/brown bitter with no outstanding flavours to offend anyone. Hop bitterness just gets the edge but quite restrained. My score 14/20. |

Last session of Tyneside beer, folk and food festival. And it has clearly been a great success. The pub is busy, everyone is wearing Ecky Thump headgear, fluent gibberish is being spoken around the pub, a chap is strangling a cat in the middle bar, and the menu is indecipherable. I feel a stranger in my own town. Unfortunately there is not much beer left.
Big Lamp - Mulligan's Stout (aka Summerhill Stout) | 4.40 | | Black stout with roast/burnt taste. |
Hexhamshire - Old Humbug | 5.50 | | Brown, strong, caramel, smoothly malty. |
Hadrian and Border - Farne Island Pale Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried
Allendale - Golden Plover | 4.00 | Not Tried
Allendale - Wolf | 5.50 | Not Tried

Prices seem to have gone up a bit since I was last in here (£3:90 a pint), but, counter-intuitively, this was the busiest I have ever seen this pub, with the crowds spilling onto the street outside in the warm weather.
Milestone - Shine On | 4.00 | | Very pale, crisp and hoppy. |
Redemption - Fellowship Porter | 5.10 | | Very dark ruby/red porter. Lacking in the expected body, with the chocolate malt taste lost to a little sourness. |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Coach House - Gunpowder Strong Mild | 3.80 | Not Tried
Redemption - Hopspur | 4.50 | Not Tried

Winter beer festival in progress with a few strong winter brews available on gravity to the rear of the pub.
Windsor & Eton - Conqueror 1075 | 7.40 | | Beefed up version of Conqueror Black IPA. Strong flavours of citrus hops are complemented by smooth malty flavours from the black malts. Full bodied mouthfeel with a smooth dark malt and citrus hop finish. My score 16/20. |
