A group of seven of us sat upstairs for quite a session. It is hot and noisy up here, but we benefit unexpectedly from table service.
Dorking - Pilcrow Pale | 4.00 | | Several of these went down well. |
Dorking - Washington Gold | 3.80 | | Another good one. |
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's London Special (was Special) | 4.50 | Not Tried
St Austell - Proper Job | 4.50 | Not Tried

Evening until close. The front fascia name signs of all businesses in the arcade are in a standard format. How boring. Went in as I saw a gravity cask on the bar - oh for the old days of a fast selling Wandsworth brewed Winter Warmer but not here I am afraid.
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's Baaaaa Humbug | 4.50 | | Almost poor. On gravity but not cooled. Cask not even tipped but this was flatter than a pancake run over by an artic. Not at all appetising and the usual wind up of no true Bedford provenance on the pumpclip |
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's London Special (was Special) | 4.50 | Not Tried
Sambrook's - Wandle | 3.80 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's London Gold | 4.00 | Not Tried

Not so busy here in the mid-evening. My 1973 pub guide tells me that this is very much a market pub, “with sawdust on the floor, limited seating accommodation and no concessions to office workers“. There is still little in the way of furniture in the ground floor bar, but at some point in the intervening years the suits have elbowed their way in.
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's London Special (was Special) | 4.50 | | Not sure why I ordered this (just a half) as I never really liked the beer, even years ago when it had a good reputation |
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's Waggledance | 5.00 | Not Tried

It is early evening on a Thursday and consequently this pub is hosting a pretty heavy infestation of City Boys. I only used the ground floor bar and did not go down to the cellar bar where additional beers may have been available.
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | | The best pints of Ordinary I have drunk in years. This beer really is on the up. |
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's London Special (was Special) | 4.50 | Not Tried
Purity - Pure Gold | 3.80 | Not Tried

I visited the cellar bar of this famous Young’s house, which has been re-launched as ‘Old Tom’s Bar’; run pretty independently of the upstairs bars, this is a pleasant, relaxed and comfortable space in a very different style to the rest of the pub. The intention is to serve a range of London-brewed guest beers. But they were the first to admit that there were beer quality problems tonight.
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | | Warm and more than a little ‘green’ and consequently rather bland. |
Sambrook's - Wandle | 3.80 | Not Tried | The barmaid warned me off this one too. |
Redemption - Trinity | 3.00 | Not Tried | The barmaid warned me off of this one. |

Late Friday afternoon and this was full of suits as you would expect. I had been looking forward to coming here for the past 6 years and perhaps I had built it up too much. Exterior was excellent but the pub itself is a bit basic and felt transient.
Young's - St George's Ale | 4.30 | | Copper colour with sparse beige head. Yeasty hop aroma. Sufficient drying hop on the end. Fullish in mouth. Quite rounded malts, but lacks intensity of flavour. Some red berry fruit. Compared with the other beers I had already had it was nice but needed more. Hop is a bit underdeveloped |
