Mid evening visit just as the rain set in. One the few remaining Woolwich area's pubs in not far off original condition.

Evening visit, a good locals' feel to the place, a beacon of bright light on the Common. Pity no micro-brewers' local ales on offer.

Evening. Quite crowded - there had been a book signing earlier for J.J. Irwin's Once a Boy. Not quite the 10,000 for Alex Ferguson's autobiography earlier this week but creditable. Any talk on blogs and other websites that Fuller's is taking over the pub are denied here.

Quiet evening - small crowd outside enjoying the late May balmy evening. Friendly welcome as always. Would love to see a picture of how it was inside during Beasley's Brewery days

The pub is found in Plumstead, Greater London, SE18 1QG.

Located in Old Mill Road right in the middle of Plumstead Common this is an historic pub. Photographs show it was once tied to the Cannon Brewery then to Beasley's Plumstead brewery, which was just down the road, until 1963 when taken over by Courage. The pub developed from an 18th century windmill, the core of which still remains and towers over the pub building. Quite sparsely furnished inside it still has the feel of the 60s except one suspects the multi-rooms have long had their partitions removed to make one L shaped bar. For many years the pub has been dedicated to real ales and has often been in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide. Often you will find characterful and conversational locals in residence. Bus 53 passes right outside and the 51 and 291 buses run nearby. A steep hill, Griffin Road, leads to and from Plumstead railway station. The publican has collected some historical photographs and papers about the pub which you might ask if you could look through. This Plumstead Common area has not been devastated with pub closures in the way that, say, Woolwich Town Centre or the lower Plumstead area has. The Old Mill is traditionally known as one of the 5 Plumstead Common Idlers - in its case as it had never ground the corn but, of course, one might argue it had or least part of its building had. But who'd argue with such an old tale now! Leave it be. 6 handpumps sported on the bar counter.

We have visited this pub 7 times, seen 22 different beers and tried 6 of them.
