Mid-afternoon visit to beer festival. Not a lot left to be honest, after an apparently very busy Saturday – enough for me to be going along with though. Mostly a local crowd, in to watch TV rugby as much as for the beer festival. Disappointingly, all of the Stanley Craft Ales beers had been drained.
Pig & Porter - Red Spider Rye (superseded by 4.8% version) | 5.50 | | Pig & Porter are currently brewing at the Downlands Brewery in Sussex. This was a very nice, red/brown coloured beer with a great hoppy taste and a rye burn. |
Adur - Hop Token Amarillo | 4.00 | | Copper-coloured. A real, bitter, mouthful of Amarillo hops. |
Salisbury - Somer | 3.90 | | Golden, fruity, some citrusy hop. |
King Beer (formerly W.J. King) - Scrummy Bitter | 5.00 | | Dark brown/reddish in colour. Came over as a bit ordinary in comparison to the other beers drunk. |
Hook Norton - Old Hooky | 4.60 | Not Tried
Exmoor - Fox | 4.20 | Not Tried
Exmoor - Antler | 4.00 | Not Tried
Downlands (formerly South Downs) - Devils Dyke Porter | 5.00 | Not Tried
08 Sep 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Beer festval in progress here with a steady stream of punters arriving to sample the wares.
Cotswold Lion - Golden Fleece | 4.40 | | Now brewing in their own premises with the ex Festival plant, this was a mildly wheaty beer with a slight haze. Some grainy wheat malt flavour and a little citrus hop in the finish. My score 15/20. |
St. George's - Premium Bitter | 4.30 | | Amber with a sweetish caramel intial flavour with some fruit in the finish. Rather low on hops. My score 14/20. |
Pixie Spring - Golden Pixie | 4.00 | | Very pale rather than golden with a dry, bitter character and a little hoppiness. Dry finish. My score 14/20. |
Stocklinch Ales - Rambler's Gold | 3.80 | | Dark golden in colour with a rather dry, earthy character and moderate hop bitterness. Dry, earthy finish. My score 13/20. |
Pixie Spring - Choirister | 4.00 | | Amber bitter with a fairly bitter character and a little biscuity malt. Dry, bitter finish. My score 14/20. |
Long Man - American Pale Ale | 4.80 | | Amber in colour with a bitter hop character and a dry, bitter finish. My score 14/20. |

Good choice by the organisers of the trip made more interesting on leaving, negotiating the very narrow streets and badly parked cars in a double decker bus!
Skinner's - Betty Stogs Bitter | 4.00 | | Toffee and caramel but not overpowering. |
Wadworth - 6X | 4.10 | Not Tried
RCH - Old Slug Porter | 4.50 | Not Tried
Skinner's - Cornish Knocker Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
King Beer (formerly W.J. King) - Sussex Downs Ale | 5.10 | Not Tried
Stanley Craft Ales - Barbs Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried

Evening visit with a beer bus full of others to this pub which was already business thriving. Clearly a pub enthusiastic for real ale. Staff were all friendly and smiling. Very fair beer measures into old CAMRA beer festival lined glasses. Note the beer from the new Stanley Craft Ales brewery owned by the guvnor here but brewery is not on site but, instead, shares the Rectory Ales site near Plumpton in East Sussex.
Stanley Craft Ales - Barbs Bitter | 4.00 | | New cask on. A vicious flowery hop bitter bite. Brewed at the Plumpton site of Rectory Ales but guvnor in pub says this is his own recipes and brewer (brewer was actually sitting in the pub) |
RCH - Old Slug Porter | 4.50 | | Rather cloying, I should have stayed on bitters |
Wadworth - 6X | 4.10 | Not Tried
Skinner's - Betty Stogs Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Skinner's - Cornish Knocker Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
King Beer (formerly W.J. King) - Sussex Downs Ale | 5.10 | Not Tried
