Mid afternoon visit. Another tick in my National Heritage Pubs book. Not at all busy, time and space to walk about and appreciate the glorious interior. Pint just over £6 though: “Salisbury Pale Ale” at 4.0% - couldn’t ascertain the provenance of this.

Very busy when I arrived at around 7:15, but rapidly emptying as Theatre kick-off times approached. I was somehow rumbled as a CAMRA member and immediately offered a discount without having to ask.

2220 hours and busy with Theatreland and tourists so lots of comings and goings. Good to see a CAMRA card holder discount of 10% prominently advertised. Never been in before despite having walked past hundreds of times.

The pub is found in Leicester Square, Central London, WC2N 4AP.
Located in St Martins Lane. This pub was founded in 1725 as the Coach & Horses, becoming the Salisbury Stores in 1865. It was rebuilt in splendid late-Victorian style in 1892. Much of the Victorian ‘gin palace’ interior survives, with a marble bar top, glazed screens, brass light fittings and woodwork. Modern reproduction glass looks very tacky alongside the originals. In its day it was a Meux’s Brewery pub, and the name of the former owner can still be seen on each face of the clock outside the pub. The pub name is now abbreviated to Salisbury. Branded for some time as a ‘Taylor Walker’ pub, although there is no historic association with the old Taylor Walker Brewery.
