Unfortunately the condition of the beer is so poor that it is hard to get the full flavour and it hangs together as a bit of an incoherent mess. Will hope to find a better example elsewhere. |

A quick one in passing after trying a couple of places nearby with which I am not familiar. A bit hot and sweaty in here on a muggy evening.

Good to find this pub open on Sunday afternoon – and very busy given that it is right on the route of the cycling Tour of Britain final stage. A ten lap circuit means it is a constant round of watching the live coverage on the pub TV, then rushing out to see the riders pass in quick succession in each direction along Lower Thames Street, then back in front of the telly again. An enjoyable afternoon of good beer and top-class sport.

The pub is found in City, Central London, EC3R 8BU.
This pub was originally called the Cock and was present here by 1816, a time when there were a great many pubs in the area. Historically this was a Charrington’s Brewery house; it was leased to Young’s Brewery for a time in the 1990s and is now with Nicholson’s. By 1983 it had been renamed The Walrus & The Carpenter and at this time it was still described as being a multi-roomed pub. It is now opened out into a single room, but the floorspace is split-level and extends around the bar in an L-shape, effectively dividing the room into sections. There are also basement and first floor bars.
