The pub is found in Aldgate, Central London, E1 6LP.
This pub was present by 1850 as the Princess Alice, named after Queen Victoria’s third child although in later years the pub sign featured the SS Princess Alice which sank disastrously in 1878. The pub was rebuilt in its present form for the nearby Truman’s Brewery in 1883. Like most pubs around here, this one has Jack the Ripper connections. By 1997 the pub had been acquired by the Thorley Taverns group, and it was renamed the City Darts – it reverted to the Princess Alice name in 2006 on becoming a free house. 2014 has seen a full refurbishment and further renaming as Culpeper. Now with bare brick walls, wooden floor, distressed furniture and bare-naked light bulbs. Vegetables for the in-pub kitchen are grown on the roof garden.
We have visited this pub twice, seen 4 different beers and tried 1 of them.
